I have pure white javas, and a pair of beautiful silver javas I recently got from LadyGouldianFinchCanada in Acton. Beautiful silvers!! Does anyone know if there are silvers in BC?? (we are considering moving out there so I would have to give up the pair I have
and hope to get another pair out there....)

Why couldn't you take your current pair with you across Canada?ambercat wrote:I have pure white javas, and a pair of beautiful silver javas I recently got from LadyGouldianFinchCanada in Acton. Try Ponytail Joe - he's a breeder/importer in Peachland, BC and travels to the lower mainland (Vancouver area) a lot, to attend the bird marts. His website says he has all mutations of Java Finches. He's slow to answer emails, but you can always call him to find out. He also says he ships anywhere in Canada, so it might not be too expensive to ship to you if you aren't very near the bird marts.ambercat wrote:I have pure white javas, and a pair of beautiful silver javas I recently got from LadyGouldianFinchCanada in Acton. Just curious, what area of BC are you considering?

Re: White and silver pied Javas
Hi, thanks for the breeder tip. I'm looking into how much it would be to ship out my silver pair too since I absolutely love them! Although a little stressful for them.....
We lived in Vancouver for 2 years but moved back in 2006, but we can't get it out of our heads, and now some other family is thinking of moving out there too, so we're seriously considering it....... moving cross-country will be interesting with 3 toddlers though! (Last time we just had 5 bunnies and a cat to move there and back....) Seems like such a final decision though where to move, wherever we go next year will be it until the kids are done school.....decisions decisions!

Hi Liz, I considered taking them, but last time we took 5 days to drive out, and I think the van might be a little crowded with 3 toddlers, a rabbit and a cat already! Looks like it might be around $100 to fly them out so I'll see if that will work out!

Re: White and silver pied Javas
I moved from the lower mainland of BC to Winnipeg, and used Air Canada Cargo to ship my dog and cats. It cost about $89 each back then (in 2000). They were wonderful folks, and showed a lot of compassion for my animals, and for my concerns. Everyone traveled with no problems at all! And no troubles on the return trip a few months later when we moved back.ambercat wrote:Hi Liz, I considered taking them, but last time we took 5 days to drive out, and I think the van might be a little crowded with 3 toddlers, a rabbit and a cat already! I wouldn't worry too much. They will do their best to look after your birds. And the Air Canada Cargo terminal is easier to access now than it was then. (I don't drive.) There's a skytrain going right to the airport now, and buses that will drop you close to there. The only concern is that they are shipped in a proper container for birds, with water in a dish, glued to the bottom, and with a sponge in there to hold the water. Millet in the carrier, too, in case they get hungry on the long flight.

If you decide to re-home them rather than stress about a long move, don't feel too bad. I've had to do the same with my finches in the past. Just remember, they aren't like cats or dogs... they won't stress over loosing you, as much as you will miss them!

Re: White and silver pied Javas
LOL yes, I am re-homing some of my birds right now and I don't think they mind one bit! When they get to their new home, they act as if nothing has happened, I kinda like that about keeping finches. As long as their home is a good one they are content. My cat on the other hand would be quite upset if we weren't with her for that week of driving, she was quite content to lay (on the rabbit cages or on my lap) the whole trip before, and we never had problems finding a hotel room that was cat-friendly in most of the big chains. I'm sure everything will work out once we've made all our decisions, it's just nice to know there are a few options anyways!

Too bad but understandable that you are re-homing them. I hope you can find the same type out west. Best wishes!

Thanks!
Just rehoming some white javas and maybe my cutthroats since they are more common, but I think I might still ship my silver javas out there with Air Canada like you said. They are not so common (and are so pretty!)

One of the members on this forum who is fairly near me has cutthroats (carpenter), so you probably will have no trouble getting cutthroats here, at a reasonable price, instead of going to Petsmart.
You said you have 3 toddlers! Wow, that will be a fun move!
When we were kids, my Mom moved all 5 of us from Montreal to Winnipeg (by train) when we were 5, 5 (twins), 7, 11, & 16 while Dad stayed behind to finish closing up the business. She said she was so terrified, to have to buy a house all on her own, without his input! We sure teased her about that for years... what woman wouldn't want a husband who would trust her to make such a decision with that kind of money???!!!
Anyway, typically male, Dad didn't care where he lived... but Mom needed it to be away from the river (the year after the big flood in Wpg.), near an elementary school and a junior high and a community club! She did a great job finding a home, even with all of us to keep an eye on at the same time!
If she could do it, you will be fine! Think of it as an adventure.

Re: White and silver pied Javas
Wow that would be a lot of work for your mom! I have twins too, identical boys that are 18 months, and my oldest son just turned 3. We are still undecided about actually moving to BC, we would love to be out there again but sometimes I feel it's unfair to take the kids away from their aunt (my sister) & grandparents. My other sister (their other aunt!) wants to move out there too so we would have some family at least, and our friends we met before. But who knows if she would get homesick! We are definitely moving, just not sure if BC or somewhere else in Ontario like the Waterloo area.... That was some story with your mom though! Very brave of her!

Re: White and silver pied Javas
My twin and I share an apartment now, and have done so for a few years. As we approach retirement (in less than 6 years) it is nice to know you have someone to share expenses with. Your twins are lucky and will be life long best friends (just remember that, even when they are fighting with each other! We did, too!
Funny story... not too long ago the two of us were in a mall, and stopped to chat with a mother and her young daughter who had noticed that we were twins. The little girl (about 6 or 7 years old...) turned to her mom and said "I've never seen such old twins!"
We got the biggest kick out the poor mom's embarrassment! The comment was totally understandable...although we aren't yet 60, we do look older, especially to a 6 year old, since we both have white hair.
And we still tend to dress alike, although unintentional....just that we have similar tastes. Most twins don't still dress alike, and still hang out together, when they get to our age!

Ponty Tail Joe in Kelowna has them, and/or can get them for you.
