He is gorgeous, Anna, whatever he is! I'll be waiting to see what some of the experts say--this would be a Fire finch species I'd be interested in working with.

Re: Need Help Identifying this Fire Finch
Oh yes, please, Sally, if you can find some (and I'm sure you can once we get his genus and species). This species really deserves more notoriety and widespread popularity than it apparently has.
He is larger than the BB Firefinches (but not by a lot). He is very vocal and will scold constantly if I'm too close to the aviary cage.
I think he would make a very protective father.
But, what really sold me on this guy was his song. The first time I heard it (varied notes and calls) I stopped in my tracks. It was so lovely I didn't want the bird that was singing to stop. Later, I tried hard to figure out which of my new birds it was and finally was able to catch him singing. Now he sings regularly throughout the day but esp. in the morning and just before lights out.
The lady that I rescued him from thought he was a BB Firefinch and had paired him with a MALE BB Firefinch. Then she wondered why they wouldn't breed.
Anyway, I decided the pictures I posted were too dark, maybe so I am posting some more to allow for a clearer look at this little fellow.

I adore the colour red and any bird that has it never fails to raise the *WANT* alarm in my head. But no extensive bird keeping for me
not until I'm out and have my life sorted! Haha.
They are beautiful

Very pretty little bird. I hate he doesn't have one of his own kind around. Hopefully you will be able to find some/one somehow. I will keep my eyes and ears open for any possibilities in my area.

Re: Need Help Identifying this Fire Finch
Thank you so much, Fardad!
I do have a problem though -- I'm not sure I would even be able to distinguish Lagonosticta Rubricata Haematocephala from L.R. Ugandae esp. with them all flying around like I'm sure they would be.
I did read your previous post again, Fardad, where you describe the difference between the two species but I'm still not all that confident I could tell them apart without someone who is far more expert at that sort of thing showing me what to look at.
I may have to ask a broker to locate one specifically for me -- is that possible?
Also, if anyone on the FF (thanks Candace -- please do!!
happens to be able to locate a female Lagonosticta Rubricata Haematocephala I would greatly appreciate them dropping me a line.
This little guy is very keen to mate -- he is singing his little heart out and very interested in all the nesting sites of the other Firefinches. He is Mr. Lonely Heart for sure and I'd love to find him a mate along with another pair or two if it were possible. He's been a rare treat in every way, a very special bird.
