Re: New Green Twinspots pics...
It is my understanding that they are an African species, and it is not a new breed, but is not common due to the fact that they aren't easily breed and might be imported more often than captive bred....I believe this pair is captive bred....I love the look of them and I will see if I might be successful breeding them....I am always up for a challenge.

Hi, I hope you have better luck with your Greenspots than I had. They do great for a while and then for no apparent reason they start declining in health and go light. Mine did not last long at all outdoors. The ones I kept indoors lived a bit longer. But I have never been able to keep them alive for over a year. I do love these birds and I will probably try one more time. They are just so gorgeous.

Hmm, not very encouraging experiences from others.
However, these birds have long occupied a top spot on my wish list and I have also bought 2pairs of the most colorful schlegeli supspecies recently.
Initially kept them in a 75x45x45cm cage, with fake plants and natural perches inside, covered on all sides but the front, yet they were still extremely shy there, with only one ever touching food in my presence.
Once transferred into my large communal birdroom, they changed completely.
Within 2 days, they became active and among the least shy of my finches!
Just another confirmation that most waxbills are not for cages...
One of my males sings, but it's not much of a song really, just a buzzing sound a bit like bees.
I love them and can only hope to have more luck with them than the other members - even if they don't breed, I hope they will at least survive longer than a year!

I think this species is a bit more delicate than some of the other waxbills. I purchased a pair at a mart some years ago. As the pair was being transferred to my travel cage, the hen died right in the vendor's hand. I was never able to find another hen, but I did keep the male for some time. He was surprisingly calm around me.

Well, after a year and 3 months in my care, both of my pairs are still alive and well, except for one female having lost feathers on the nape - not sure if it is to plucking or other reason.Hmm, not very encouraging experiences from others.

Thevrainy season us starting here now, and I've seen one male flying around with nesting material. I am not setting my hopes too high, but at least they've survied over a year already!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they go to nest for you and raise a family. I know you've been waiting a long time.

Re: New Green Twinspots pics...
To be honest, so many people told me they are very hard to breed that I am not even really waiting - it would be more of a big surprise!
And of course it would be wonderful.
But based on what I had read here, I am happy that they are alive and well, too.

Re: New Green Twinspots pics...
We have had a pair since March and they do love meal worms. Ours are not shy. We have them in a large double flight cage with a pair of Red-billed Fire Finches and Blue-capped Cordon Bleus. They are bonded, but we have never seen any interest in mating from our pair. The male has a very interesting call that has about 7 parts to it that include a buzzing sound and variations of a high pitched sound and various whistles.
