Jerry, I am sorry about the female. I would like to share something with you. I had a pair of them, I also bought John a pair and sent them to La. Mine built a nest, laid eggs..infertile. This happened a few times.
The hen became eggbound, servely despite doing the oil in the seed, Liz helped me through what to do like warm wet towels on the cage heat lamps...it was sad, she shook so had and would stand upright. She passed the egg and I kept her warm but decided to not breed them. I took the box away and gave them a platform...they were fine for awhile like this.
One day I was in front of the cage and watching them roost, her head dropped and she passed away in front of me. I was so upset.
John also had problems with them leaving their eggs, tossing chicks. His female passed a little bit ago.
I started doing some looking to about eggbinding. Female birds can develop adhesions that can hinder or prevent an egg from passing. Some adhesions are so bad the egg never passes with heat and support, eventually the bird may pass due to stress or the egg not being able to pass or it breaking inside. A vet is often needed to help. I found a wonderful medical avian health book on line, it explains this. I think with certain species some are more sensitive and can have difficulties.
When I was looking at the 2 pairs at the bird fair, they were in a cage with other RHfinches. A man came up to me and said he could not blieve it, the RHfinch kind of vanished in the breeding world and this was the first time he saw them in many years. He actually helped me pick the females, looking for young hens.
They are stunning birds but for some reason based on the experience you, John and myself had it seems the females are delicate.
I am so sorry that you lost her and had to return the pair...good luck with your gouldians.
