And to THAT I don't agree...Chichireeo wrote:Agree again! That's why I walk my bird.dfcauley wrote:Birds need flying space. I think we could get "used" to being in the house all the time. But..... we all like to go outside.![]()
Are you sure you are not "humanizing" your finch somewhat? If you want a small companion bird, wouldn't it be better to get a parrotlet, they really can get attached to people and like attention while still being able to interact with their own species in a normal way.
I'd love to think that for example my snake likes me, because she comes out of her cave when I open the top of the enclosure. But when I'm honest I'm pretty sure that "liking" has nothing to do with it, she just know that usually I open it because she gets a mouse.

I think it's a fact that there are "companion pets" like dogs or parrot birds that actually like interacting with humans, and then there are pets that we keep because we enjoy having them around and they tolerate us for feeding them. I think the finch falls in the second category.
Sorry, off my soapbox now.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Re: I want one for Christmas!
Now I am getting miffed!
This is the first time I am not happy about posting a link,
to a bird that is a great singer!
Now it's happened!
I didn't want this thread to get into a debate over who is right or wrong about training and keeping birds!
I did get some pm's from members who are not happy that the bird is I a small cage.
Fine! The point has been made!
People, don't hijack a thread to have an argument!
No more Grand standing or Soap boxing PLEASE!
Can I have a moderator lock this thread, so no one posts anymore!

OK, we agree to disagree. And I'll reduce my posts to happy smilies and agreements only again, like I did before at one point, if that's all that is desired on the forum...

Re: I want one for Christmas!
I think each member of this forum is entitled to their opinion but after having stated it once - that should be enough and I don't see a need to reiterate it time and again.
We need to remember this is a forum for all to openly discuss birds and bird keeping and not everyone does everything the same as everyone else. We all have different ways of doing things and different opinions. We have to do what works for us individually. Let's remember to respect each other choices and not put others down. Education is one thing but we can't change everyone to our individual way of doing things.
We don't want to have to lock threads just because of differing view points. This thread started out as something like: that's a pretty bird I would like to have. But now it has changed drastically to how to keep a bird. Let's try to keep the topic subject in mind and be respectful at the same time.

I agree this thread should be locked. We are all owners of CAGED birds. So let's not go there.

Is ther no middle ground!
Sounds like Sour Grapes to me!
This is why I left other sites, because one person would hijack a thread and ruin for others!
You made your point, that you disagree with training cages and that's great, but don't keep reposting it!
Just to add!
I have bought birds that were aviary bred and were just a wild as wild birds and I put them in tiny cages as I was told by am Italian breeder to do so!
In two weeks the bird was calm as a puppy and would take food from my hand and sit on my finger!
I did this with my green singer and now he is in an aviary and still comes to my hand for meal worms!
This Italian breeder has been keeping birds for over 75 years,
in Italy and Canada, he is now 89 years old!
His advise has saved me birds from near death!
I would take his education over anyone else's!
Now I'm on my soap box!
I hate bleeding hearts!
Not saying anyone here is bleeding heart!
But, I find bleeding hearts don't like people!
They would never think of being cruel to animals,
but they can be the cruelist people to their own kind!

Re: I want one for Christmas!
I see these at the New York shows quite often (though not in large numbers - usually a few serious breeders with two or three birds for show) - they are terrific singers, the song is unbelievably loud even compared to the chorus of Canaries that are usually at these events.
I think most people up here refer to them as Seedeaters instead of Towa Towas?
They're really beautiful, you can't get a good idea of it in the video but they have almost a metallic essence/sheen to their plumage similar to Combassous.

No problem with cages...... just small ones. (and not all of us have CAGED birds) I am done... and very sorry to have offended anyone.

At least I am not offended at all, Donna. So no worries there.
Only I feel bad about Jerry's thread being hijacked.
Now where did I see that towa towa before? That name is hard to forget. I think it was one of these having a singing duel with a GS on a video. But i can't find it yet.
