I consulted Roy Beckman since he is the only baby out of the 3 clutches to look this way. I explained the dad's background was unknow...a pet store rescue. We think he is having issues with D3 or his liver and we are trying a few thing to see if it helps. I moved his cage near a sunny window, full spectrum lighting, he said the diet is good as I described it. We are just not sure exactly why this happens it could be something he is predisposed to.

If the extra sunlight and lighting works, when he molts he should loose the black, if it does not well he will just have to live with the name Scribbles and enjoy a good life here.

I had a bird, he was melanistic, but I "cured" him.
I first thought he was "triple black" (BB BF BC)

In the case of this little guy he was the only one like this out of three clutches. He is in a sunny location at my friends house, he looks great and even recognized me when I walked over and said "hey sweeties", he popped over to the side of the cage near me beeping.

We will see if he looses the black, as it was explained to me sometimes it does not go away and it could be just something this bird's system is prone to. I did notice the black band under the chin was much thinner so maybe the sun shine is working, something the 2 sun sticks close to the top perches did not correct.

Wow, that zebra was beautiful with the black, but how'd you know there was a nutritional problem that caused the black? Curious about the sun issue.

Deborah....this is Garrie Landry's article on melanistic (black) phase

http://www.zebrafinch.com/newzebra/BlackFace.html

Birds not exposed to sunlight (D3) can have changes in their plumage, darken....exposed to the sun can restore their colors back to normal after a molt or two. Sometimes it is caused by a flaw in the birds own make up (internal).

Go to NOTES on http://www.efinch.com/species/bfzeb.htm
