I heard the beautiful song. So I know that I have a male![/quote]

Well it is confirmed. They are both males. I have heard and seen them both sing. I knew there was alot of beatiful singing going on out there for just one..... I guess that I will have to work on trying to work up a trade for a female or find a couple of them. (which will not be easy)

One of the petstores where I live (Saskatoon, Canada) has several strawberry finches and I really really like them except that the price is $158 for each finch, ouch. Would any of you pay that price? Another petstore has one strawberry finch I think it is a female and it is listed for almost half the price.

158 is very steep. I would probably think about paying it if I had the opportunity. They are very rare here now. Go to the one that is half the price. Here they were selling at pet stores for 69 dollars.

I agree with Donna and I'd go for the 1/2 price female IF she looks alert, active and healthy. Then just wait for a male to come available somewhere near that price.

$158 is way too much, especially for a petstore bird with unknown history. In the U.S., it seems like everyone is looking for hens right now, perhaps you would be able to find a male in Canada.

With the export ban Strawberry finches are getting very hard to find and the situation might not improve for a long time. I have 3 pairs for 2 years now and last year I had 2 nests of 2 chicks each destroyed by my pair of Strawtailed wydah in the community avairy. Now the 2 pairs are in their seprate 7'x3' avaries and one of the pair is building a next. I would pay $158 each if the bird is looking healthy but it is always a chance with pet store birds anyway.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I think I will purchase the one that is half the price and possibly purchase a male at the $158, maybe, I will post what I decide to do when it happens

The thing that bothers me about the whole Strawberry situation is that yes, they are very hard to find, and yes, they have become more expensive because of that. Yet, I keep hearing about Strawberries being available in petstores, in various parts of the country. Someone has to be breeding them in some quantity to supply these petstores. Or are these their culls? I mean, I don't run down to my local petstore looking for the harder-to-find finches, so why are Strawberries turning up there, yet not available elsewhere? There may be a very simple explanation, but it is just nagging at me.

I know that I have been able to get a few babies, but I have a waiting list for these babies--I certainly wouldn't be selling to a petstore.

Got one

Post by kylehca » Wed Sep 03, 2008 2:48 pm

I just bought a strawberry finch at the Petsmart in Saskatoon, Canada. Very nice and I am very happy with him. I put him in with my silverbill and red eared waxbill. I have a question though, the silverbill doesn't like him and chases him around a bit but the strawberry is faster so gets out of the way. Will they end up getting along and accepting each other? I have the Hagen L02 vision cage and I am getting a flight cage soon (really like the HQ double flight cage).

Watch them for a while and they should be okay. Silverbills are usually not agressive at all. They are very passive birds.

You are so lucky to have found a male Strawberry--I absolutely love their song! Were the Silverbill and the Red-ear the only occupants of the cage previously? If so, they may have bonded and would look on the new boy in town as an intruder. Trios are always difficult, the old two against one thing. Just keep an eye on them.

Yes, I love my strawberry finch's song, he started singing today, and the silverbill is more accepting of him as well, but you are right Sally, the silverbill and red eared waxbill have bonded they contact sit and prune each other. they sometime sit together and turn and face the opposite way of the strawberry finch, very rude if you ask me. I think I will get him a partner and I know my cage should not house 4 finches, but I am gettting a double flight cage soon and all should be well.

Here in Italy, with the export ban those kind of birds are totally vanished.
Looking for them is very very hard (or impossible?).
No more Waxbills in our Petsmarts.
Buy them only if youre sure to bred them...as seen as you can find them too, don't be stupid as like us.

Some Strawberry groups live here in the wild, heirs of birds escaped from captivity many years ago. I heared that someone is catching them with big nets. Perhaps we can use them for start all over again with them...but not as like in the past.
