Re: cordon bleu blues
I had a male that was aggressive to many of the other finches in the flight. He was in with other male finches. He wanted to fight everyone even though there were no hens and no nest. There was plenty of space and food dishes. I had to separate him and hope to get a hen this spring and set the pair up. Maybe he was just frustrated.

Re: cordon bleu blues
Hello everyone:
So as you know , or may not know, i've posted multiple times re; my cordon's throwing out three clutches. Well...i found a dead baby on the floor of the aviary almost 2 weeks ago, very small and completely naked. I continued to feed the live meal worms, the veggies and the fruits as well as egg food...thinking this is a last ditch effort. I had separated them from all other finches and moved the large bamboo Keet nest almost on its side....I was going to dispose of the next, give up, but the female would not leave the nest even as I was taking it down. Another week has past and I heard nothing. I decided to stop attempting to breed my cordon's and sell them. I started to remove the nest and a not quite fledged baby jumped out of the nest. WOW...I left it on the floor of the aviary for a while not sure what to do, then scooped it up and put it up near the nest and it jumped back in. I don't know if there are more but if past clutches are any indication, iIm expecting 3 or possibly 4 chicks.
I'll keep you posted. Don.
Also , I don't know if your aware, I'm sure many of you are, that if you place a small wedge of potato skin down in your little containers of meal worms, and keep them in the fridge, they will last much longer than 2 weeks. Mine lasted at least 4.

Re: cordon bleu blues
Congratulations!
I feed my mealworms carrots instead of potatoes with great success. Personally i think carrots are more nutritious.
Best of luck, keep us posted

Re: cordon bleu blues
Congrats on the baby!! Your parents have been feeding, which is great, as Cordon Bleus are notorious for not feeding their young.
Another tip on mealworms (though I forget to do this myself). You can take them out of the fridge once a week, give them a bit of carrot or potato and leave them out all day. At the end of the day, take out any uneaten carrot or potato (carefully cleaning out any mealworms hidden inside the pieces) and return the mealworms to the fridge. They will last for a lot longer this way. Of course, this is caring for mealworms you purchase. Mealworms you raise don't need to be kept in the fridge, unless you are producing so many that your birds can't eat them fast enough.

Re: cordon bleu blues
Huge congrats on the fledgling, that is a major achievement!
Re Sally's comment about mealworms in the fridge, it's very important to take them out once a week to revive and eat. I lost track of time over the December holiday's and ended up with 2,000 very dead mealworms in the fridge because I didn't take them out to eat. Such a waste!

I've done that too, and kicked myself over the waste. I'm not the most organized person anyway, so I don't always follow my own advice!Rox wrote: Huge congrats on the fledgling, that is a major achievement!
