Re: I got new birds!!!!!
I have done alot of research and never read about a male possibly killing a female. I have had (and bred) canaries for about 5 years and have had 3 different pairs. The only time I have experienced excessive quarreling is when the female does not like the male. But no harm was ever done and the birds were paired with others and then did fine. I think canaries seem to be a bit more picky about their mates than finches. I have always kept my pairs together throughout the year and not had ANY problems. The pair I have now have been together for 2 years and they get along wonderfully. I was not trying to sound like a know it all. This is just my personal experience.

Re: I got new birds!!!!!
I have bred a many of canaries. I agree that if the pair is a bonded match they get along great. Also if kept on the same diet/timetable then they usually come into breeding condition at the same time. Many times the males killing female thing happens because the male wants to mate and the female is not in the condition yet. And they are kept in cages where the female cannot escape,,,causing death. Rarely would this ever happen in a large aviary.
Also it is true that people have been keeping canaries in cages for their song for centuries. Single males and by themselves, the males sing and sing and sing...... why because they do not want to be alone but they want a mate. Just because people keep them singly doesn't mean the birds are singing for joy
I would always seperate my males from the females though. Of course I caged bred and there just wasn't room for both for the entire year to be housed this way. Also many times just being together will stimulate the pair to overbreed...or the hen to become 'broody'. Even to the point of incubating an empty nest.
