UPDATE:

Seeing as it's saturday here, I was home for a good part of the day cleaning etc and was able to witness some pretty aggressive and territorial behaviour from the combassou. I guess they were all quiet and well behaved when I got home during the week because it was dark and they were all roosting. I didn't have any idea what was happening during the day.

Sadly, I had to return the combassou to the pet store that i wanted to "rescue" him from. I feel bad for the little guy but he was really attacking the gouldians and my 10 year old zeb. I couldn't do that to them.

Well, now I know why they aren't more popular. Why couldn't he just behave?? :(

Oh that's such a shame! I was hoping you would be able to keep him.. What size enclosure were they in? Cage, aviary? I wonder if the size of the enclosure plays a part in the aggression. Did you manage to take any pics before you brought him back?

And yes, I find that if the people on this forum don't have a species of finch it is almost always for good reason.

You must be so disappointed Brette, hopefully you'll find something to replace him soon.

I saw some yesterday at the bird mart. They are absolutely beautiful birds. My husband really liked them, but I had to say I didn't think they would work in our mix of birds from what I had read about them.

Sorry it didn't work.....

I have a big, fancy flight cage for them. It's about 3.5 feet wide x 5 feet tall and have 4 finches in there.

Live and learn I guess. I usually don't make impulsive buys when it comes to finches precisely for this reason. I like to read a lot before I do, and after buying him, what i read about them wasn't all that great as far as being compatible with other birds.

Oh well, the little star finch I bought along with the combassou from the pet store seems really happy at my place. Thanks guys!

My local pet store has a pair of Combassou Finches (male and female) for $129.99 and they've been there awhile. I'm in love with them. They look so great. But will they get along in an aviary with 2 pairs of Zebra Finches?

It's a rather large cage.

Do they need a different diet from the Zebra Finches?

Thanks
