Isn't it exciting when you find other breeders to trade/sell birds with?cindy wrote:Through selling some of my zebra and shaftail offspring I have gotten to know a few other finch breeders that have some of the same species I have and some I don't. I met a really nice fellow that bought some of my shaftails, he has green singers and a big aviary. he has RCCBs (from Miami) so I may be able to introduce a new bloodline to mine it they produce for me.

Also, congrats on your new birds and also on your owls. I have heard owls can be difficult to breed so you must be doing something right

Thank you donna and Meagan. What to get next, hmmmm! I would love to find Plumheads. Donna yours are so sweet! I have only seen them at one show back in April. Maybe some fawn zebras or a different mutation. Maybe a pair of Lemon finches.

Domenic, I am having a little trouble finding a picture. They are not Lemon Breasted Seedeaters. The Lemon finch male is a soft lemon yellow all over with a little tan on the tail. The female is light brown and white almost like a stripe pattern.

We always called those the lemon finches due to thier latin name.cindy wrote:Domenic, I am having a little trouble finding a picture. They are not Lemon Breasted Seedeaters. seninus citrinipetus..... citrin = citrus. If you google lemon finch this is what will come up as that is thier common name. They are also called the yellow breasted canary and have song like that of thier close relative the green singer.
I think you may be thinking about the sparrows like the ones in the last picture of this post. The broker in Orlando can get you these. They are pretty

If that is what you are thinking of they are a sparrow. common name golden song sparrow...here's some pics for Dominic

I found the latin name earlier today but what came up was just dark videos of them singing...good pics Candace. If I go to the Orlando show in April I'll check with the breeder there. I saw them last week but did not know enough about them so I passed on buying them.
There was a very nice pair of RH gouldians in Naples but I will have to wait, still not sure about getting into gouldians.

If it is the song sparrow that you are talking about the latin name is passer luteus.
They are active birds and can be agressive to others, kind of like the saffron finch.
There is something about yellow birds that I find very appealing...I guess that's why the yellow canary was always my favorite of the colorbreds.
I thought about picking up a few pair at the Orlando show. They were all imports and wild caught. They looked super healthy but they had mostly males and I also thought I really didn't need to add another species at that time...not until I discontinue keeping/studying one that I am keeping now. The fellow that came from Missourri wanted to trade a pair of young owls for a gouldian....I was tempted, but then again, I am not ready to branch out with different species.

Re: Green singers and Black cheek zebras pictures 3/28
Candace, the Lemon finch is delicate in frame and light pale yellow. I briefly saw them, they were different but I don't like to buy anything I don't know that much about. Buying on a whim is not what I want to do, I would rather have a little knowledge behind me before adding a different species to my flock.
I bought the Red Headed finches after reading about them, emailing other breeders. I felt comfortable adding them to the group but they are a very difficult bird to breed. They lay eggs sit but do not follow through completely. I spoke with a breeder recently about them and it was suggested placing their flight cage in a very quiet room without other birds and traffic. I moved them to a room not used often, it is quiet and sunny. Hopefully this will work and maybe they will raise a good clutch. The female stresses prior to egg laying so she gets extra heat, seed with wheat germ oil (she love it, dives on the dish when I set it down) and Calcium Plus. She will lay eggs sit then toss the eggs part way through incubation. Very frustrating but I am patient.
Hopefully with extra quiet the pair will do better. If not they are neat birds anway.

Yes, I understand researching about birds...I am just trying to figure out which species of bird you are talking about when you say lemon finch
The citrinipetus or the passer luteus or something else?

Candace, I hope you feel better soon. The Naproxen in Aleve should help.
