Yes, they do try to make you feel guilty! One of mine likes to fly to the front of the cage and hang on the wire mesh and talk to me. If I press my head against the wire she pulls my hair.

Well I don't know about the US but in Greece canaries are more popular than ever as pets, almost every household has one. They're pretty easy to take care off, good quality seeds, greens, apples, egg-food before breeding, avoid draughts. Mind you a good singer in Greece is about 50 euros, and most people don't care about breeds, they simply like their song and colours.

I just think Canaries don't look interesting in the least, there is something about their shape I absolutly do not like, I know I don't like their beaks for some reason.
If they could at least come in cool colours and not just warm ones.
Only thing I think Canaries have going for them is their song.
Thats just me though.

In response to canary personality~
I find my canary much bolder than my finches. He investigates things very quickly when they are put in the cage while the finches take a looong time thinking about it before going to check it out. He is also calmer and doesn't mind disturbances as much.
Hope that helps.

I think it is just the cost. My local pet stores concentrate on parakeets and Zebra finches, both relatively inexpensive. People willing to put money into a bird hobby seem to go for the larger hookbills right now. I recently toured a private aviary devoted mostly to large hookbills, and to me, the noise was deafening. The owner also had a few cages of finches (also some money, as she had Cuban Melodius and Saffrons) and most of the owners of hookbills commented that they couldn't stand the flightiness of the finches! Thank goodness there is something out there for everyone. I would love to have a canary one day, when I have more room--their singing is priceless!

Nigel (my canary) is the king of the roost. He puts up with no foolishness. He stays to himself but watches everybody else and only reacts if one of the finches (usually a zebra, of course) comes too close or challenges him for food. He seems to enjoy changes in the flight; moving perches, new plants, different food, etc, quickly investigating. He seems interested in things outside the flight as well, the dogs, me, and especially the cat. He taunts the cat, like ah ha you can't get me. Likewise Nikko (the cat) is much more interested in Nigel then the other birds.

We recently bought 6 Canaries without knowing much about them either. However we found a great site very much like this one except it's for Canaries. Check it out...
