When you read about a Zebra/Owl hybrid, and see that they are both in the same Genus, Poephila, it begins to make more sense. With the common names in parentheses right after the scientific names, I think everyone would be able to find the information they are seeking.finchmix22 wrote:Liz,
Your welcome. I think, being fairly new to this myself, that as long as the common name is in ( ), newbies will be able to learn, as we all can do. I just copied and pasted the list from the finch info ctr, but I do not know them myself. I looked at the names and realized what type of finches I have and their behavior make a little more sense when I realized they were related to another finch I'd read about. So, hopefully this will be educational.

Okay, now I'm really going to start some trouble....
but I was sort of wishing someone would go back to previous posts -- maybe for just a year -- and put them in the correct sub-forum. (Don't slap me!)
I was just wanting to 'deepen' the resource you are creating by these sub-folders by putting in some of the information on species that is already out there. We have such a wealth of prior posts on individual species...
Sorry. I'm a BAAAAAD girl.....

Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
OK, this turned out to be a bigger deal than I realized. A few finches are listed in a different genus depending on where you look. Most noticeably, Owl and Zebra finches are listed as Poephila and also as Taeniopygia! The Firetails were also listed under Emblema and also another genus, but I think most know them as Emblema.
So Liz, whatever you think with the Owls and Zebras, I have put them in both places in the list, and you can decide how you want to do it. I think I have covered most of the finches that appear in this forum. (Jerry, I even found your Desert finch, totally by accident!) I don't know if anyone has any Crimsonwings; if not, we could eliminate that one for now.
And no wonder I like the Cherry finches so much, they are in the same genus with my beloved Stars!
If anyone sees any errors in this list, or has any additions to make, please post it. Maybe we can get Fardad to double-check the list!
Amadina (Cut-throat, Red-headed)
Amandava (Gold/Orange-breasted, Strawberry)
Carduelis (Goldfinch, Desert, Greenfinch)
Chloebia (Lady Gouldian)
Cryptospiza (Crimsonwing)
Emblema (Diamond Firetail, Painted)
Erythrura (Parrot finch)
Estrilda (most Waxbills)
Euschistospiza (Dybowski’s Twinspot)
Hypargos (Peter’s Twinspot)
Lagonosticta (Firefinch)
Lonchura (Bengalese/Society)
Lonchura (Silverbill, Spice)
Lonchura (most other Mannikins/Munias/Nuns)
Mandingoa (Greenbacked Twinspot)
Neochmia (Cherry/Plum-head, Star, Crimson)
Padda (Java)
Poephila (Heck’s/Shaft-tail, Masked, Parson)
Poephila (Owl/Bicheno/Double-barred)
Poephila (Zebra)
Pyrenestes (Seedcracker)
Pytilia (Aurora, Melba)
Serinus (Canary)
Serinus (Green/Gray Singing Finch)
Sicalis (Saffron)
Tiaris (Cuban Melodious)
Taeniopygia (Owl/Double-barred/Bicheno, Zebra)
Uraeginthus (Cordon Bleu, Purple Grenadier, Violet-Eared Waxbill)
Vidua (Whydah)

Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
Hmmm, maybe my idea about separating the species index into individual forums wasn't a good idea and I feel bad about suggesting it. If I have a question about health on a Parrot finch, do I put it under health or under Parrot finch? Maybe the only way to have this work is either have all the indexes under the individual species and remove all the other indexes. Maybe it would be better to click onto the species you're most interested and read all the posts that are being asked/answered....whether it's about genetics or health or breeding. I really didn't mean to make this complicated.
Now that I think about it, I think that would make the most sense.

I think the problem with that approach is that there are a lot of different topics/questions that can be applied generally, to several species.atarasi wrote: Maybe it would be better to click onto the species you're most interested and read all the posts that are being asked/answered....whether it's about genetics or health or breeding. Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
Actually, I still think the sub-forums were a great idea!
I think what we posters now have to consider is this:
Is the subject a general one that could apply to ANY species or is it so specific it really only applies to ONE species? For instance: There are NO health issues that are specifically related to only one species of finch. So put ANY health issues under Health.
If the subject is specific to only ONE species -- like what sort of colorations will I come up with if I combine two different color mutations of a gouldian finch.... Put it under GOULDIANs.

Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
Good explanation, Anna. Jordan, I think the subforums can work, but each poster will just need to think about where their thread should go. If someone wants to know if the new CB hen they have is RCCB or BCCB, that would be a perfect question for the Species subforum--or there may be photos there already.
Again, a lot of species-specific information is available at the Finch Information Center. IMO, these species subforums would be a source of experiences of other breeders/hobbyists.
