Ick. Petsmart experiences sound bad. They are not selling birds right not because cockatiels being infected with psittacosis. I do not like buying animals there but I love getting stuff there because they do price matching :]
Audio- Sorry to hear about that :\ I think they should be able to do it; have hope!

I think that was a single incident though. More often than not their birds look great.
I see birds all the time at petstores that look sick. I'm waiting to walk in and find one dead. They need to have employees that actually know how to take care of birds instead of some teenager that just needs money for some clothes.

I personally am a teenager and I do want to work at a pet store as a summer job, but because I care. I want to help the birds, reptiles, fish, etc. not for clothes (though I admit so many people do work at pet stores for the sake of money only) and most of all to inform so many clueless people who get birds for the novelty of it.
Maybe the petco I went to was an exception...I guess now that I think about it, they go through phases. Sometimes there are good employees other, not so much.
But I agree, there are too many sick animals in chain stores-- have you SEEN the fish at Walmart? It disgusts me.

Lia-W.....I noticed the same thing at our local Walmart...the fish and tank conditions looked really bad. Why do they even bother to have live fish when they obviously don't care for them properly.....Oh wait I know....could it be it's just all about the $$$$$ and the bottom line. Walmart = Guilty!

FH - our wal-marts are all the same, I wouldnt take any fish from them if they were free. It's amazing how any survive long enough to find a home.

The Petsmarts in my area had the quarantine on birds before Christmas and the sign said they would available for sale in Jan. I went back in Feb. and now the sign says available for sale in April. How long will it be before their birds (by their standards) are safe to buy? Even then how safe will it really be? They have OC's that are missing lots of feathers and others who are all puffed up and none of the employees seem to have a clue of what to do for sick birds. It's so sad to see those little guys that way.

Thats odd because the petsmart here did the same thing. I didn't go back so I'm sure if they changed the date of sale. Hmm...

I would be willing to bet.
#1. they arent treating them properly as they should and doing the meds as directed and cleaning etc.
2.) I would also bet they are still bringing birds in and thats spreading and keeping it going.
Sadly employees at these places are NOT usually trained to know anything just sell sell sell,
AND Even if there is aknowledgeable person it comes down to management and what they ALLOW the employees to do,
A good friend of mine worked at petco or petsmart I am not sure which I always confuse them, lol anyway they changed there fish set up to NEW filter systems sadly it now has it set up where EVERY SINGLE TANK in the place recirculates and SHARES the same water, Hence 1 sick fish and they are ALL sick or carriers/
the fish at are walmart actually look ok, BUT I usually find myself helping more of their custonmers than they do as well as teaching the employees how to catch fish and so on, lol
I will NEVER buy a bird from a petco or petsmart I dont care HOW LONG they are in recovery

A lot of the Walmarts in my area, most in fact, don't even sell fish anymore. A good thing, because the tanks always looked so awful

I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it.

The birds at petsmart are not in quarantine because they are sick. It is because petsmart discovered several cockatiels with
psittacosis, the bird form of chlamydia which can be passed to humans.
The complete recirculation system at petco/petsmart is actually
VERRY GOOD because they have a UV sanitizer which kills bacteria in the water of the fish. It is really great for them and I would get one for my fish if they were cheaper
I am not arguing
FOR these stores, but neither am I arguing
against them.
The pets stores all have different employees-- some care and others do not.
