My friend lives in the country, outside of Fort Worth and she has a flock of painted buntings in her forest area by her home. We were barbecuing one day, and she hushed everyone and pointed at her kitchen window. Lo and behold a pair were sitting the the window sill and courting. I've only seen some of my finches do the courtship dance, but these were fascinating in real life! I wish we could keep them as pets too. They are so beautiful!

They are beautiful. I have been feeding them for the last 4 years when they migrate South for the winter. In the picture below you can see two males and one female. The females are all green. That is not a cage the one male is in. I had to put that wire enclosure around the feeder because the other bigger wild birds were eating all the seed.

Thanks for the picture, Rey. They are so beautiful. And what a super cool idea, to keep the bigger guys out of the food. I can't believe how lush and green everything is over there. Here we are under a couple of feet of snow. Brrrrr.....

I have a friend that breeds painted buntings regularly amongst other rare buntings/birds. He is breeding Red cardinals, Painted buntings and orange breasted buntings. They are a sight to behold :)

I envy your friend.
I think Malta, is a little far from me to go, even for a Painted Bunting. Although I bet the weather over there is a lot better than the weather here in Canada. :-D
