Re: Swees and Owls
Donna, I know for the longest time I wanted owls. I found them 2 yrs ago but the timing was not right. The breeder was a lovely woman that was a wealth of information about them. She retired and had sold her stock when I started looking for them again. Patience and time were the key and now they are here.
Don't you love little presents that bring you joy!!!!!
As soon as you get them post lots of pictures.

Re: Swees and Owls
This is how it was for me and the Grenadiers - waited and waited for them. And, I finally got them when they took the holds off of importing a few years ago. Otherwise they were just a species I could hope for from pictures.
BTW - any one working with the Violet Ears? I still have two males and no females (never did). They really need to go to a home that is working with them.

That's a shame Misty. I really love them. Someone on here, I can't remember who has a beautiful hen. I think they are stunning birds. I hope you find someone that is working with them so more can become available some day.

Beautiful birds. Both owls and "swees"
As one of the 'Africans' I can confirm we call them all swees. The YB are East African Swee and the Black cheeked swee the E. melanotis. The latter I see in wild flocks. They are gorgeous. I need a permit here to keep them, but for the life of me cannot source a breeder. Same problem as you guys, even though I live in the country they occur in!

I'm just happy to hear you do see them in "wild flocks"!!! I hope they continue to thrive in their native country for a very long time.monotwine wrote:Beautiful birds. Both owls and "swees"

Have you ever seen the "Locust Finch" in these wild flocks?

Re: Swees and Owls
Johnboy,
I looked at my pair tonight and I really can see a difference on the belly. See I had all females before so I could never compare them but I can see the male does have a brighter yellow and more of it.

Re: Swees and Owls
Can't say I have ever seen a Locust Finch, wild or domestic. I think they occur naturally higher up in the country.
The Swee occur here in their most Southern distribution. Higher up the country you see more and larger flocks.
Our local botanical garden has a resident flock of Swees and they are quite tame. They don't care if you get within a few paces of them. Seem to have lovely natures.

Misty I had no idea that you had violet ears! I wish you would post a thread with pics of all your birds, I am dying to see them all. Especially the grenadiers, everyone knows how partial I am to them!

Re: Swees and Owls Update 11/30/09
I got the results back and I have T H R E E males and only one female
I'm so glad I got 4 - otherwise I would have ended up with all males this time. Before I had all females
Now I need to find more otherwise I will not be able to create unrelated bloodlines
Donna have you talked to Floyd about anymore of these coming in lately? Too bad we weren't in CA this weekend - the fair they had - had them...
