I got me a dog, a guinea pig, 2 bunnies, one tiel, one budgie, and some odds -n- ends of finches. Including 3 gouldians, a black-head white breasted female, and 2 RHN males.

A friend of mine thought that this perch was a model of a diseased intestine from American Science and Surplus, ha!

Hello from the Philippines

Post by martin » Fri Aug 04, 2006 6:00 am

Hi! I'm a finch newbie. Last week, I got myself three pairs of finches local to the Philippines, and one pair of Zebra Finches. The local ones are sopranos and the Zebras are tenors. I am planning out my 10 by 7 feet aviary with double doors adjacent to my daughter's bedroom window and the kitchen window (any health concerns on that?). In the meantime, they now swing with a fruit tree where I tied their 24" x 20" metal cage. I wove basket vines through the slots for perches and stuck in two live vines with live branches of the tree. Yes, I do sympathize with them now.

Can anyone tell me what my local finches are called? The males are pure black and the females are brown.

I know I will enjoy this forum. Thanks for allowing me to join!

Martin

Hi JeannetteD, Ken. Ken is right about the description but I cannot seem to find the uploaded picture that you mentioned, JeannetteD.

These birds are high strung. They panic each time I approach their cage even as I whistle their tune. The Zebras are friendlier.

Bad news. While taking my coffee this morning, I discovered one black male missing. Then I saw feathers. My first suspect was my little snake that got away a few months ago. But then again, I figured that he would be stuck in the cage with that lump in its stomach. So it must have been a shrew or one of those sewer rats. I didn't have to call Ace Ventura for that crime.

My solution - I wrapped my guyabano (soursop) tree trunk with tincan. It's an old trick farmers here in the Philippines do when rats invade fruit trees so that the rats slide down instead.

So this morning, off I went to the Finch guy (5 miles away!) and got myself a lone zebra male (black/grey/red/orange with a beautiful black and white bib). I wonder if I can cross breed the two species!? I also got them the squid stuff for calcium and that string of orangy seeds that he said came from Belgium. Geez, I can't even get myself my Belgian chocolates! In time I will know finch terms.

I will have to content myself with four pairs until my aviary is done. Ed, the finch guy, advised me to set a layer of hollow blocks at the base of the aviary so that predators cannot dig their way through. I think their little dormitory now will belong to a mina bird that I am contemplating on adopting.

Sorry to hear about your loss! The picture posted is in the Gallery, under Adult finches, and it's on the second page. There's apicture of indigo with lavenders.

Most african finches are skittish and I find they are even worse than zebras for flightiness. Most of my zebras dont even fly away when I go to put their food and water in the cage now, but the africans do all the time.

Finches really aren't meant to be tame. I've heard that with handfeeding babies you can raise them to be less skittish, however I've also heard that ify you put that one in a flight with birds who are skittish it will return to it's natural behavior.

I had two cordon bleu finches until yesterday. Now I just have one. I also have two russian miniature hamsters.

I have a very special Westie mix dog from the animal shelter that I have had for nine years now. He had a tag on his cage that said he was going to be put to sleep the next day and I couldn't resist. He has been the best dog I have ever had. Of course. . .my terrier is not particular fond of the hamsters or the bird.
