Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
Liz, if the common name was put first it may help.....when I go into the species section I automatically look for the common name like zebra, owl first, my eyes go to the left side first. Just a suggestion but this may simplify it some especially if one is in a hurry to post.
bullet each species and space between each species.
* zebra ~ poephila
* java sparrow ~ padda
for multiple birds in one species
Neochmia (Cherry/Plum-head, Star, Crimson)
* cherry/plum-head ~ neochima

Re: NEW: Sub-forums for different types of finches!
Liz, it is time consuming going through that long list to find what is interesting to me or not. People are already posting in the wrong area which is annoying. You pull up Amadina and there is info on goulds and zebras. I realize mistakes are made, I make them, but I just don't know why it is left there and not deleted after being moved to the right area. It may be trivial but to me it is annoying. I wish, as I said before, that the sub-forum would follow the species forum if indeed the sub-forum is going to stay. I just feel the forum wasn't in need of a face lift. It was perfect the way it was. Now it gives me a headache.

I don't think we can or should put one species into multiple lines as that would really make the list a LOT longer. I didn't realize it would/could be difficult to view the common names after the scientific names. But we can have that as an option when we take the vote later in August ...to rearrange the names to show the common names first. Although I think that may reduce the learning of the scientific names (although I realize some or most are not interested in learning scientific names) - we can be flexible to that end. Also, if we put the common names first, what order would we put the whole list in?cindy wrote:Liz, if the common name was put first it may help.....when I go into the species section I automatically look for the common name like zebra, owl first, my eyes go to the left side first. Instead of going through "that long list to find what is interesting" you can simply click on "View new posts" at the top-right side of your screen and you don't even have to go through each forum searching - all the new posts will be right there in one place for you, John. As for people posting in the wrong area - I did move those posts as it shows but I left a "shadow" in their place. I can stop leaving "shadows" if that will help you as well. And as was already mentioned I will look into having the sub-forums UNDER the Species forum. Please allow a little time for this (if it is even possible) as we do have other things that take up our time.JohnBoy wrote:Liz, it is time consuming going through that long list to find what is interesting to me or not. Anything else on your list of annoyances or frustrations...?

Clicking on this shows new posts in EVERY topic though, not just in species.L in Ontario wrote:Instead of going through "that long list to find what is interesting" you can simply click on "View new posts" at the top-right side of your screen and you don't even have to go through each forum searching - all the new posts will be right there in one place for you, John.
Sometimes I don't really care what posts have been made in Resources or Diet & Nutrition.. so I personally never use the View New Posts option because you still have to sort through what you care to read..

Liz, if the proper name is listed first could the common name be listed in a color or visa versa. It may help with some of the issue. The new way just takes time to get use to, I usually post to zebra and know where to go right away now...."p" ~ poephila. Now to learn to pronounce it!!!

Liz and Janine, y'all are saints!
Thanks for putting up with all of our different opinions and demands and pov's!
It's a hard job you've got and you both do great at it.
I'm just happy that the FF is here and whatever pleases the majority is fine with me, too.

I like it even better now.
It really does help with learning as it's more organized and you'll see the names over and over everytime you check the forum. It's not too extensive as in you can easily find what you are looking for. Familiar words should jump out at you.

I think the poll will be interesting. I will post the voting poll on August 15th and will leave it up for 1 week (in case anyone is on vacation).
I think the voting poll will consist of 3 questions:
{} We keep the Species Forum as it is currently (no changes)
{} We go back to the old set up of everything mixed together
{} We make some MINOR changes to the current set up (ie put common names in front of scientific names).
Does that sound okay? Did I miss anything?
