GS - the great escape!?

I found this little guy on the floor of the cage and the parents a little anxious (flying back and forth). I scooped him up and wedged him back in the nest this afternoon and have not seen anyone out since. His eyes are not open yet (or he was sleeping). I did not try to band him since I've heard the parents don't appreciate that while the chicks are in the nest. I'll wait til they fledge (for real) to band them.

Thanks Janine - me too!

The GS's fill in their (canary) nest so much that there is only room the for 3 eggs and then they turn into 3 chicks and they grow with very little room to maneuver, so it's not really surprising that one got knocked out.

I guess I should move the chicks from the first clutch out soon. :?

I'm glad you were in time to save it.
It looks as 7-8 days old chick to me- before their eyes got opened.

It is adorable! So glad you found it in time. The Gray Singers are the same about building an open canary-type nest that doesn't seem big enough for the babies--I guess if it was a closed-in nest, the babies wouldn't be falling out like this, but the parents won't use a closed-in nest.

Thanks all - I'm very glad too that I found it in time. I was a little concerned that it got tossed on purpose but it has not made a repeat showing. =D>

Each time I walk past their cage I do a quick count of the nestlings: "1-2-3, all okay". =D>

Liz, have you tried this type of nest? They are meant to hang on the outside but you can rig it with zip ties to hang on the inside. Maybe this will act as guard rails and the little tikes won't fall out of bed!!

Ah mai oui, but I knocked and no one answered so we came back home. Didn't see the doorbell.

I'm very lucky to have all three older siblings still alive at this time. I went into the birdroom mid afternoon today to check the nestlings and found one of the older siblings hanging upsidedown by his leg (not moving) from a fake plant that had frayed a bit. He got some thread caught around a toe. I got him off the plant and had to then untangle the piece of thread. He is fine and now all three older siblings are in a cage across the room from the parents and the nestlings.
