Parrot Finch - first time parents! (fledged today 9/05/10)

Sorry but I do not have any pics of the hatchlings yet - I'll try tomorrow but I found these two Blue-faced & Lutino Parrot Finches have hatched two of their three eggs so far and the last one is still fertile and active inside the shell. One of the chicks looks bigger than the other and they were both squirming around the nestbox quite a bit. I think they were hungry as I didn't really see any food in their crops. I hope the parents will manage through to weaning these.

I got this pair in Oct 2009 and although I've had eggs from them before, I gave them to one of my pair of Societies as the BFPF would not sit on the eggs. But this is the first time they actually sat on the eggs and now hatched them! I'm so happy for them. =D>

Here's pics of the parents -

Thank you Janine. Those are the parents above and I'd sure love to get a baby just like the Lutino mom there!

I gave them some live mealworms (cut in 1/2 to prevent any crawling away) this afternoon and they just scarfed them down so quickly and have been going in to the nestbox lots. I've already refilled the dish with more mealies tonight. I'll try to get baby pics tomorrow at suppertime. Hopefully there will be three by then. [-o<

That's exciting news! :D The parents are both gorgeous birds. I love how BFPF's almost look like blue headed gouldians.

Hallelujah the third egg hatched and the parents are feeding all three of them. Looks like the middle one got all the broccoli!

Notice anything strange about the nesting material? Or rather the lack of it? They removed everything I had put in and then proceeded to start laying eggs. So I put some papertowel in the bottom and placed the eggs on top. Thankfully they accepted that.

They look fabulous, Liz--congrats! Now I'm kind of sorry I rehomed my lutino BFPF hen--but I couldn't find a mate for her. Oh well, someday I'll have room for Parrot finches again.

Gorgeous babies and so well fed! Sometimes birds just need experience at the parenthood thing I guess.

That lutino hen is spectacular, too.

I'm jealous -- I have a weakness for PF's.

It would be cool if one of chicks was lutino.

Thanks for sharing -- don't forget to keep the pic's coming!

Nice looking triplets =D> Looks like the parnts are feeding them good :D
I am however surprized that they removed the nesting material. I have only seen hookbills do that.
