My breeder friend gave me a family of small finches last week. (I am a newbie)!

What type of finch is this?

I believe it may be a St. Helena.

No, it is Black-rumped (Red-eared) Waxbill. St. Helena has stripes all over the body.

I was thinking it was the red brow... neochmia temporalis

There are quite a few finches that closely resemble one another. Sometimes it is hard to tell, especially with a frontal photo. The black beak threw me...but I guess it is a young bird?? Is this correct?

Candace, I didn't notice the black beak, then it should be Rosy-rumped Waxbill.

It could also be the Black rumped or red eared waxbill ~ Estrilda troglodytes. Some of the sites say the young have black beaks.

The St Helena (Estrilida astrilia) I had never produced so i can't tell you about beak color...Candace is right, we need to see more of the bird.

The FIC has photos of the Common (St. Helena's) waxbill and the Black-rumped (Red-eared) waxbill side-by-side for a comparison of those two species. It says the juveniles have a dark beak, but then they don't show the red eye stripe, so the bird pictured in Mimi's post is probably not a juvenile. Rosy-rump is probably it, but need more photos of the actual birds to compare.

St. Helena's, with the body stripes, are lovely little birds.

Thanks, I agree... I had never seen this waxbill before...but the black beak was really unique and caught my eye. Thanks for the name, a new one that I will research

That is Ray's avatar. Probably one of his birds he bred. Maybe he will chime in...if he ever got back from Hawaii. How was the trip anyway?

I say rosy-rumped waxbill. I have all three and this looks like the rosy.
