Got 'Em Crimson Seed Crackers

Post by JohnBoy » Fri Oct 01, 2010 10:20 am

They arrived this morning in perfect health and extremely alert. I did not want to disturb them by getting to close with the camera so I took these at a distance using the close up feature. I also have pics of the new Bl & Wh mannikins.. I will get better pics as soon as they calm down.

I have no experience with the seedcrackers. Not much out there on them either. Little info I have found says they are aggressive toward smaller birds. I am keeping them in their own cage. Seedcrackers have been bred in captivity.

That red color on those Seed Crackers is gorgeous. I don't remember seeing these birds before. Must be expensive birds.

During the summer they were selling for $350-$380 a pair. They have come down to $250.00 a pair this fall so I decided to go for it. It still is a lot of money, and I will be paying my VISA for a few months to pay them off. [-X on me!

John, if breeding goes smoothly...do you think you might start a colony of them? They are very pretty.

I hope I have a pair. I have read in a book that the black bellied seedcracker females are much duller than the males. I can't find info if this is also true to the crimson seedcracker. Both of mine are brilliant in color. I may have 2 males if that is the case. Gee, then I would have to get more. #-o

Update: I just noticed that one has a much brighter white eye ring than the other. Hope this is a good sign.

They are calming down a bit.

Gorgeous birds! They are worth the money if they bring you enjoyment and a challenge... the best things in life are not necessarily free :D
