No restrictions here whatsoever...but British finches cannot be sold unless close rung to prove captive breeding. And keeping British birds without closed rings could cause awkward questions if an investigation was made for any reason.

I believe by law we are not allowed to keep native birds (in Canada).

Contact your state fish and wildlife commision or the state agricultural department. You can google both.
Different states have different restrictions , for example you cannot have java finches in Georgia but here in Florida it is legal. So you must check with you own state.

I think that's the same in the U.S.

I just emailed the wildlife commision and they also said

None of the North American finches, or any other truly North American bird, can be kept legally as a pet under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

So I found a website with some of the finches we have here in North America but is this a complete list?

Here is a link to a large list of North American birds. If you want only finches look for the family Fringillidae

Some domestic birds have escaped (or being set free by owner who don't want them anymore ) and actually starting to multiply in the wild. Maybe somewhere there are wild strawberry finches in the US? My birdbook lists all sorts of parakeets and parrots...

For example, starlings are common in the U.S. but they are actually European natives. And because they are a nuisance in this country (like rabbits in Australia) you are allowed to keep them as pets.

If you go with species that you get from finch breeders in the U.S. you cannot go wrong as long as you check with your state's exceptions. (For example in Georgia I can't keep Java Rice finches. Unfortunately, because I really would like them! :-))

There are an estimated 100,000 Ring Necked Parakeets living and breeding in the UK...10,000 in London alone in large flocks. No one knows for sure where they originally came from.

Same as my avatar.

PS....Reading further from this post of mine I came across a post from a farmer in the UK demanding that they be culled as they would attack chicken flocks in his area.
Just shows how stupid some people can be....chicken eating parrots...whatever next?
