Black-faced Fire Finches

Here is the hen that Fardad brought to me at the birdshow in Richmond Hill yesterday.
I removed the divider and the new couple are not displeased with each other. She is (obviously) a real beaut and already makes me proud!
On a side note, it really upsets me that a well known "champion" exhibitor and breeder had the BFFF male paired up with a Black-bellied Fire Finch hen and sold them to me as a (way overpriced) 'pair' and again my thanks to Fardad for setting me straight on the true species identification. The difference is obvious once you know it.

beautiful pair!!! good luck with them!
Just curious about putting this pair together the next day? Is it because you know the breeder?

Yes, Renee that is the exact reason. I would NEVER do this if I had any doubts about the breeder or if I'd bought from a petstore or other questionable source.
And actually it was the "same day" that I put her in with him but with a divider so they could get to know each other from a bit of a distance at the beginning.

Oh ok, because I feel the same way. I go with a bird by bird situation. Good luck with them!Renee

She is nice looking... though I would have a hard time spotting the differences too. It's great you have someone like Fardad in your neighborhood to get some great lessons
Isn't it frustrating to know that even champion exhibitor...and worse, the judges don't know the species that well either

Maybe you can find a mate for the other one and have pure pairs of 2 kinds...or have you alraedy paired her? I don't remember.

Yes I have paired up the Black-bellied hen with a fresh male. Fardad pointed me to an appropriate importer that had a male and he even went there to ascertain that it was the correct sub-species for me!

If I were 20 years younger and single... his girlfriend would have competition! She's a lucky woman!

Beautiful pair!! They look like a medium lavender in color?
So nice of Fardad to help you out there.
Be interested to see what happens with both of your pairs. I had one pair of Black-Bellied Firefinches but the female was old and died before she reproduced and the male died later in a freak accident.
They are very interesting birds! Do they build normal nests?

I hope mine are a true pair. I have had lots of egg laying and setting with them but nothing ever hatches out.

I remember your pair and was wondering how they were doing now. Sorry to hear nothing is hatching yet - sounds like my Strawberries!!

From the pic (which is a bit of a distance away) - yes. Can you get a closer photo?

You know, Fardad, you always speak of your uncle when talking about finches and it has made me very curious. I like to understand about people and maybe you could start a new thread and tell us a little about your uncle and his birds -- is he still alive? What did he do that engendered such a love of finches in you?
I am truly interested and I'm sure many others are as well.

I don't imagine it would take a lot of someone "doing anything" to get a youngster interested in birds. Just by observing the beautiful colourings of the birds and the obvious love I'm sure your uncle had for them would have worked it's magic on you.
Did your uncle have a lot of birds all the time? Were they in large walk-in flights and aviaries?
Oops - now I'm off topic. Don't tell any of the other mods.
