Has anyone out there had or have now any Java finches? I found a local shop that has a ton of them in there and love their look and their size. I was wondering how hard they are to keep. I'm really thinking of getting a pair of them. They have the normal and whites there and man are they pretty. I love those beaks too.

Thoughts?

I have a female java that a friend of mine gave me. She's a little darling. She's pretty much the same as zebras I've found. Instead of giving her just boiled egg though, I mix in some rice, as they are rice eaters.

That's what their latin name means 'rice paddy eaters'...

Thank you for the link. I will continue to do research to make sure these really are another type of bird that will work for me. I love their song too.

Well I bit the bullet and got the Java's. I picked out a beautiful white male and a normal female. His song is so great. They were banded from the breeder but you can tell by the eye rings as well on this pair. I'm going to wait until quarantine is over and then set them to breeding I hope.

My zebra's are somewhat aggresive and I think the size of the Java's will not be to much of a problem so I'm going to try and house them together in the big flight part of the time. Any major reasons I shouldn't do this out side of the size factor? I will get to know both birds before I do this and keep a very close eye on them.

Looking into getting a building for the back yard to. I need an in - out door flight.

Who is monster? Did I miss you telling us you got another starling?

The lady who had Java (real original name for a JAva isnt it??? I thought so too hee hee..) before me kept her in with Cordon bleus, societies, zebras, canaries, .. and a few others I"m sure I'm missing. Anywho, she didnt have any problems with Java in the mixed aviary.

I didn't mention getting another Starling. Monster flew in last week from Portland. She is the same age as my Ugly bird. No breeding with these two they are family members only.

I'm going to call my male Jack but haven't a clue for the female I have just been calling it Java as well. To funny.

some of my javas

I have not seen any Javas around in Southwest Florida. I am wondering approx. how much they cost? I saw online one breeder sells a pair for $50 and another website that breeder sells them for $40 each (the normal type).

i think the u s prices are appallingly high as in this country they sell for around £20.00 per pair which i beleive is around $40 dollars per pair..they are always sold this way in our country,otherwise you can end up with a lot of same sex birds on your hands and to a store thats not good business....the normal wild colour is always cheaper its the mutations that are more expensive.....the problem is that a lot of the javas sold as normals are not!because if they have a small white mark anywhere else on the body apart from the cheek patches they are classed as pied and will breed pieds

Thank you for the information! We are checking out a pet store out of town tonight than sells all kinds of bird individually! I am hoping we can find them for less than $40 each.

i wish you luck as you say with your quest to find some javas,by the way they are really hard to sex...being sexually dimorphic but the beak in the male is sometimes larger

I don't care to breed them, only to have them in my presence because they are such gorgeous birds! I am just fine with the wild coloration because I find it to be the more appealing, personally!

Just called the pet store we're going to tonight. They do have Javas, however they're $60 each
