I went to a pet store earlier today and saw that they had four Gouldians! I didn't read if they were female or male (i was in a hurry lol) but I think they're still young. Juveniles are tan, right?
Each are $100 which I expected, but I don't have any other finches with me. And I can't afford to buy two of them.
Would a Zebra or Society be a good...'cage mate'? Also, what genders are good together when it comes to finches?
If I'm only getting two, I want them to at least like each other, lol. s:
I'm going to call tomorrow to get more info. I guess I'll post again when I know more.
What other finches go good with Gouldian?

Leondra,
I highly recomend that you do not buy a juvenile gouldian a store should not be selling uncolored birds to the public. There is a high chance that the bird will stress and get sick if not properly taken care of. Here in california you can get colored out normal colored gouldians for about $45. If you was to buy a juvenile you should not pay more than $40. I see juveniles for sale here from individuals not stores for $25-$35. If you was to buy it make sure it has a warm cage 85-95 degress for a few weeks. Put a heat lamp with 60 watt bulb next to a perch so the bird can get to the heat if it wishes. Make sure it finds the water cup add spray millet and even some boiled or scrambled egg. If you check around I bet you could find a pair of gouldians for around a $100. If you did another type of bird I would do the society not a zebra.
Is this a brand name pet store or a local pet shop?
Good Luck Rich

It's a Pet Supply House. Maybe I should be looking for a breeder if I can get a pair for $100. s:

A breeder would be a much better idea. I have bought from pet stores when I had no other choice, but I prefer to buy from a breeder. You know the history and bloodlines. If you are patient you will be rewarded with a better option.
Try ask the forum if there are any breeders near you. A very helpful bunch on here that put the birds interests first, so you get honest feedback.

A Society finch would be a better match than a Zebra - only because Zebras can be so pushy and Gouldians usually aren't pushy at all. Unless you have a male/female trying to get to others to breed - then they can be down right crazy birds!
Breeders usually don't sell their Gouldians for $50.00 a piece - but then some do. The going rate for green Gouldians is usually in the range of $65.00 to $75.00 if they are not split to blue.
