Blue faced parrot finches

I finally found a pair of Blue faced in Miami today.
When I got home I realized they are nearly double the size of the lonely 6 month old male I have. Are there different sizes? The new pair is larger than the red throats I have and the first male is about that size. Which is correct?

All the blue face that I have seen have been larger than the red throats. The band size calls for a size "D" on blueface and size "C" on red throats and forbes.
Congrats on you new birds!

My new pair just trilled. Both of them! Now I have three males! This is how I started with the red throats!

It was the only pair he would sell out of the two he had. They hadn't bred so i was planning on switching the males out but they are all males! I have no idea how to do pictures. Sorry

Ugh! I just went thru this too - I traded one of my heavy pied males for a female that is pied - different blood line. Get home and she is a he!!! Now I'm right back where I started and out a young pied male.

I think you have to seperate and observe young parrot finches to sex them. The males tend to start trying to sing(trill) at a few months and if they are seperated and some time is spent with them the sexing can be done accurately. Maybe people just don't have time...?

Could be. Personally, I don't see how people can stand NOT knowing -- I always want to know what I have!

Me too that is why I took mine to the trade knowing he was he not a she... oh well win some loose some...
The parrots are the hardest to find and hardest to sex sometimes.
Plus since they don't live long lives like the Gouldians - getting older birds from people is not always nice either...

Why not collect a small blood sample from the bird and have a DNA sexing done. Very accurate.

I have been told that the male BFPF blue head colour extends past the eye and is a bright blue.
The hens head colour dosnt go past the eye and is more subtle blue.

Yesterday kcdozy decided he could part with a few hopeful hens. One is definite and the others are too young to sex. As soon as the weather warms up in Atlanta he can ship to FL. I am totally appreciative and excited to finally get them.
Thanks Rich!
