Goldies Only Now!!

Hello Everyone,

I have decided to only keep Goldfinches, EGF's, SGF's and any others that fall into the group.

Today I sold off my last two canaries.

I love all birds, don't get me wrong.
But, I am limited for space, the room is 12 x 14 feet.
I don't want the birds to be on top of each other and crowded.

I have had, Javas, all colours, Gouldians, all colours, Firefinches, Parrot finches, Grassfinches, Canaries, Chaffies,European Green Finches,Green Singers.

My favorite has always been Goldies.
I still need to SGF males and a EGF female for the season.
Also maybe a Himi pair if I can locate a pair.

Who else is just keeping one variety?

Jerry

Thanks,

That's what I was thinking.
You want to give the best you can,
and you can't do that if you are all over the board.

Remeber the old saying"Jack of all trades, Master of none"!
I want to master one species and I know Goldies are not easy to breed, but why not shoot for the best, eh, and master them?

One never knows a a mutation could come out of one of the nests!
Also I think the importation of these birds will stop,
and we will have to work with what is available.

So lets build up the stocks and have really good birds.

Just a thought!

Well, my commitment lasted only a few days. :^o
Yesterday, I wnt and purchased a male Green singer finch. :D
Now, I am looking for a hen for him.

I justify by telling myself they are small birds and breed very easily!

I am getting discouraged with birds that won't breed or do go to nest and abandon the chicks or throw them out the nest. Therefore I am seriously thinking of eventually sticking with just Gouldians.

I have always found it difficult to 'master' too many species at one time. When I first started breeding, I was like most and had pairs of everything. I soon found that this was not the best for the birds nor very fulfilling to me, the keeper. I then narrowed it down to one major species and then maybe a few closely related type species that were similar. I started with canaries and had the goldies on the side. Then stars and cordons with a few other pairs of waxbill types on the side. The the zebras with the sides being shaftails and manikins........ on and on. I always kept a few of my favorite breeders until they passed of natural causes and sold out the rest...or placed with other breeders. This way it kept me moving forward to study new species. I now concentrate on the gouldians and parrot finches..... It is hard not wanting everything though.
But I do find it much more to my liking to study in dept each species, one at a time.

Goldfinches are a beautiful finch and have a great song. And besides 2 or 3 is not overdoing it. It's only if we try to keep more than we can comfortably cope with. That would be doing the wrong thing by our finches.
