I while back I saw some society finches with what looked like their hair parted down the middle. I'm having a hard time finding info online. They kind of look like Gloster canaries with the funny hair-do. Can anyone tell me what these are called?

I'm hoping to find a trio of these around here. I'm not exactly sure where to look but I'm going to ask around. Societies are such dirty little things so I want ones that are fun to look at to make up for it

Debbie I'm deeply envious! When they have babes, would you please (please!) consider me as a prospective buyer/rehomer? I'm just desperate to find some with plans to breed for crests.

I have a few crested pied Societies available - but they are all siblings. I don't think of the Socs as being any 'dirtier' than the rest of the finches. They all seem to make the same amount of mess around here.

Thanks Liz. I'm just waiting on the BCCBs to start laying (they are already starting nests) to make sure they are a good pair and then I will be ready. I will keep you posted. Do you have 2-3 males?

The societies I had were always pooing in the bath and drinking water and I had to change it 2x or more per day. And they liked to poo on everything. It was a lot different from the other finches I had at the time.

I think there may be 2 crested pied males available. These are youngsters - hatched the end of September and the beginning of December. They are not trained as fosters as yet. I'll try to confirm their gender in the next few days.

Mike, I LOVE societies, the extra mess they make is so worth the joy they bring! I have crested and non in many colors/mutations. I really enjoy them so much. They totally make up for that extra mess, and I don't think they are dirty at all.

I have one male and one female crested pied Socs that are related so you wouldn't want both of them.

No that would be good at all, would it. Well if I plan to take a trip up that way in the near future, I can let you know and maybe I could take just the male. It's still a little early but I will see what the local shops can do for me as well.

Although it doesn't much matter, I was thinking about a white, fawn, or white/fawn crested (although I've heard the white ones can be blind). It would be interesting to find a true albino, crested society, but I don't know how good they would be as fosters. There must be a fancy society breeder in the GTA somewhere. I'm not really a fan of "designer" birds but societies are really just man-made, anyway so why not go all out!
