Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. Previously I have asked if anybody knew goldfinch breeders in WA, but found one in town next to us, so as for now just waiting for a couple of weeks before I can get the pair. Well my question would be this, how do I keep them, I did surf internet and got some info. I will have flying aviary for them, not too big but good enough, later I will post the pic. my husband is working on it. I do have a pair of gouldians, and 4 parakeets, they all have their own space and flying cages, so they don't interact, I just feel safer this way, because parakeets can harm little ones. Well this is my story. I would be glad to hear your experience with those little ones.

Thank you for the link. I did got some info. online about goldfinches. But I would love if people who do have those birds would tell me about the food for them, because so far I am getting this idea that canary and finches foods are not so good for them, better to give them wild bird finch food. I just don't want to screw up and kill my birds.

Please do your homework before buying any birds. This is a bird for people with some degree of experience with song birds.
The goldfinch needs a special carduelean mix that is richer in oil seeds than the standard canary or finch mix. Wild bird seed will not be the correct seed either. Since Blattner's is no longer availabe in the USA, I would suggest Abba 3800 as a commercially available goldfinch mix. unfortunately, I can't vouch for the seed mix I make my own blend.

Thank you everyone for your help. I will look up those websites. I did had some experience with a song birds, I had successfully bred canaries for a while, but then I had to sell them, well now I miss songbirds, I love to listen and watch them. Finding out proper diet for goldfinches would be my goal. That is the reason I posted here, because I know that a lot of finch lovers have those birds, and, in my opinion, hearing peoples experience sometimes better than a books.

Wow, those webpages did help a lot, well now I have another question, Where do I find ABBA product? Its in NJ, I tried to call but no success. Its seems like they have the best food for those birds.

Good luck with your new birds. I buy the Abba 3800 for my European Goldfinches from birdsupplynh.com (Bird Supply of New Hampshire). It seems a bit pricey when you're purchasing it, but they don't waste any seed at all. With the other seed, they seem to toss it out to get to the ones they like. You'll have to post pictures of your birds once they get settled.

I called the breeder today, well he ownes the small pet store too, and he told me that he feeds them with a mix diet (finch food, sunflowers hearts, * seed), but then again it does not look good of a diet too me, I was even planing to plant some of the grasses for their foods. It looks like it will be a lot of work but I know I will enjoy the results. I might even ask the guy to order some of the ABBA seed mix for his store, because he will benefit from it too, since he will be selling those birds might as well sell the food too.

Well, I just purchased the seed mix, and by the time the mix will come I will be able to purchase my birds, I am so exited.
