Java Rice finch...

What are your thoughts on them? A friend I work with is trying to get rid of this little one.

I agree that is a Java finch. I've never had them but have heard they are terrific finches. Haven't heard anything negative about them.

Javas are great colony birds that are easy to breed and are very hardy. They require more room if possible than most smaller finches. They can be pushy with each other as well as harass timid species but I love them anyway.

I agree..I had them year ago...they are a bit territoral if not given the pace the need, especially when neting. They are hardy birds and very comical.

Do you think they would fit in a larger (to me) aviary with many other species? Say 9' Long x 4' Deep x 7' Tall

Yes. They like larger parakeet size nest boxes and parakeet seed. They also love greens and don't require live food to breed. I agree with Cindy they are very comical.

Java's would easily fit in that sized aviary BUT it depends on how many other birds you have in there at the same time. Overcrowding is not good for any bird.

I will tell you that the cage must be rather large with multiple netboxes hung at the same hieght, offer more boxes than pairs. I had 2 pairs in a rather large flight, there eemed to be an inviible boundry and if one or both of the other pairs "stepped" over the line during nesting...there was bickering between both pairs.

My recommendation is let them free fly in an aviary and pull the pairs you want to breed using individual cages unle you give them ample room.

I was going to point out the same thing. I also don't understand why they allow so many other species that could potentially be invasive as well, but no javas...
