Baby owls housed with smaller more delicate zebras

Post by cindy » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:20 pm

I set up a large flight cage into a top and bottom section...the bottom os for zebra young that need to color out and the top will be for baby owls.

I have Florida Fancy and Florida silvers, their young are tinier, more delicate than the other zebra young...they are also very sweet. Can a few of these young while coloring out be housed with baby owls?

I am pre-planning both set of young are still in the nest...I may need a plunger to get the owls to fledge!!!!!

 That gave me a visual of a woman with a plunger in her hands, the end of it attached to a small bird's nest, the woman with both her feet up on the side of the cage, plunging away frantically trying to get something to come out of that nest!

Thanks for the laugh.

The babies could be heard across the room on March 9th. Sally figured they could be about 7 to 10 days old at that point...they are feathered and I see glimpses of the white on their face sometimes when they move to the front of the nest....it is taking so long!!!

I am just concerned as to were to put them after it is time to ove them to a cage of their own, I though maybe mixing them in with the FF/FS babies since they are so much more delicate and tiny compared to my other zebra offspring...I am making up cages to have on hand for the future, plus my friend is giving me 3 more 24 x 18 cages.

The FIC says they fledge in 22-26 days. If your Owls were 7-10 days old on the 9th, then they would be 20-23 days old today--getting close, Cindy!! Mine aren't out yet either.

Ok....one was peeking out. I was on the phone at the time so I went and got the field binoculars...here I stand across the room peering through them... waiting!!!! The mom saw me and blocked the entrance to the nest, ya think she would let me look afterall I feed them and give them a wonderful place to live!!!!

Funny part was I still was talking on the phone..it was cradled between my shoulder and chin as I held and focused the binoculars!!

So now back to the original question   Can the little owls be housed with gentle small Florida fancy/Florida silvers? I'll put the binoculars down if you give me your opinion!!!!

I've never had any but the normal Zebras, so I really can't say how your more delicate Zebras would do. You could always try it, just as long as you have another cage to move them to if it doesn't work out. I'm thinking my Owls might fledge tomorrow--then again, it might just be wishful thinking. I think I see a fawn in the bunch!

My experience is "they will fledge when they want to fledge."
I have been frustrated waiting for them to fledge also.
I have had a few early fledgers, but mostly later than scheduled. Sometimes, if you have multiple chicks, the early chicks will wait till the later chicks are ready then they fledge together.
