java finch advice

Post by arcta » Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:49 pm

hi i am new to this forum. i have a pair of java's and i would like to know who i can put with them. i just ordered a 30x18x18 cage. i plan on just 2 more birds, but i can seem to find the info that i need besides weavers. i had them with some smaller birds so i know that won't work. they were fine with a canary as far as i could tell. they aren't in the same cage anymore for other reasons (like smaller birds being picked on). i read bigger birds or same size. so any info would be appreciated! thanks!

Welcome... Check out the Finch Information Center to the left and look at Species. http://www.finchinfo.com/birds/finches/ ... /index.php

There is a ton of great info on this site!

Good luck!

They get along well with lots of birds in a large aviary. In the specified cage size you ordered I personally would just keep the one pair in it. If you insist on a second pair I would recommend another pair of Javas. A different color form.

Welcome to the forum!
What size cage are they in now?
Are they a male/female pair or same
sex pair?
Personally,I think the 30x18x18 cage
is the minimum size cage I would keep
the java pair in. If they go into breeding
mode, there isn't enough room in that
cage for any other finches to get away
from them if they became aggressive/territorial.

Is it possible you could keep the javas in the
new cage and get another pair of something
to keep in the old cage?

I think you would need a MUCH bigger flight/cage
to mix them with other species.

For what it's worth, I keep 3pair of javas in a
mixed community with gouldians,shafttails,zebras,
societies,blue capped cordon bleus,goldbreasts and
star finches with no issues at all...
They are,however in a large,walk-in, indoor aviary.

Hope this helps.

they are currently in a 26"long cage. i was thinking of putting them in a smaller cage for a day, rearrange it and put another bird of the same size or another java pair if i can find them again and put them in all together. sex is unknown in both birds, they were with silverbills where i bought them a couple of weeks ago. one is the normal color the other is duller without the normal markings just a little black on the head. i will place a pic later when i have time. thanks for the advice!

hi
i agree with some of the other posts i think that cage size is not really big enough for anymore birds, you may get fighting with too many in one cage.if they decide to breed then you will have wished you hadnt put anymore birds in there with them, anyway the java with the markings may just well be a pied and the other sounds like a normal colour to me,anyway welcome to the forum and lets see some pics of your birds and thier cage
