Mystery Finch

I bought a finch today as a Society Finch, however, I think he looks more like a Spice Finch. The man insisted he was a Society though. I bought the bird anyway, remembering that there are European Societies that don't look like normal Societies.

So what did I get, a European Society or a Spice Finch?

Looks exactly like a normal spice to me! Where did you get it, a breeder or a petstore?

I'm no expert by any means but from comparing pictures online it looks like the Europeans have a black bib that the Spice finches don't. Like I said, I'm no expert so it's best to wait for someone that knows more than I do. However, it's a beautiful bird! congratulations no matter what it is! :D

From a petstore. Went to the breeder I got my last Silverbill from but his birds didn't look all that hot this time around so I went to the store.

I'm going to say its a male, he's singing up a storm in the flight with the other birds. Doesn't sound like the "kitten meowing" that I've heard a Spice described as, but it doesn't sound like any Society I've ever heard either. He kind of reminds me of the sound the little lasers make in Star Wars, just very soft and quiet.

check these pages out to help you compare

society....possibly a chocolate self if there is no white on the body

Spice...

Based on comparing the pictures, white on the belly, the scalloping in the white/brown on upper chest, beak and face...looks like a spice.

I agree with JohnBoy -- I think you've got a handsome Spice Finch there. I've had a Spice Finch and the sounds it made sounded just like what you are describing plus it looked just like the picture...
