I have a headache...

Post by Ratrodfink » Sun Apr 10, 2011 8:21 pm

Well my Cuban Melodious spent several days building a beautiful nest. Wandering in and out and placing every fiber just so. All seemed to be going well then...she lays in the food bowl sometime yesterday and one of them broke the egg in the meantime!!

Could it be possible she hates the nest even though she helped build it? Should I remove it and try a new one? It's a bamboo full covered nest. I have a canary wire nest box I was going to try but before I got it in the mail they had started to build in the bamboo.

I wouldn't remove the nest just yet, she may just be young and learning how to do all this. After several more days, if they aren't using the nest, I would still leave it, and maybe just add the other nest to give them a choice.

One of my pair laid three eggs at the end of last month and then decided to take the nest apart and toss the eggs out also.
Two of three eggs the shells were soft and the eggs were broken.
Now both pairs have eggs and the hens are sitting tight.

It's still early and probably their first time.
Give a chance, they will get it right. =D>

Jerry, thanks for asking. I decided to remove the covered nest and found that they had built what seemed like two nest balls on top of each other with no entrances. I replaced that nest with an outside hanging wire nest box with a canary nest cup. I covered it with greenery and lined the nest with a felt pad and some jute. They started building in that nest but it still doesn't seem to have an entrance. Currently I'm at a loss and am hoping that what everyone says is true and she's just young and inexperienced.

Dude,

There is an entrance. But so small you can"t see it.
It"s like a little tunnel, just big enough for her go in.
Leave them alone, she will be laying, is she has not started already.
You are on the right track, it's as it should be.
They are smarter than we are!
