Nuns

I was remembering my past finches the other day that I no longer have anymore. One of my very first finches was a Black-Hooded Nun. This made me kind of miss her, and I'm thinking about getting a Nun or two again sometime. My initial Nun had some sort of foot problem, she was missing a portion of one of her toes and she often stood on one foot, moreso than normal, so I wonder if her foot hurt her to stand on.

Anyway, she was the only Nun that I'd had in the cage at the time, along with a few other kinds of finches. She wasn't overly active, usually just standing on her perch on one foot. She wasn't overly friendly to my other birds either, not that she was aggressive, she just didn't really socialize with anyone except a Silverbill, which I still have at nearly 6 years old.

Are all Nuns lazy and standoffish, or was it just mine, perhaps because of her foot?

I always found the white hooded, black hooded & tri colored nuns to be very calm and peaceful. They were always my favorite finches. Too bad you can't find them any more.

I used to have 4 white headed nuns in a big aviary. From what I remember they could be quite active or quite peaceful. They too were one of my favorites it is a shame that you cant find them anymore. :(

I'm not sure if this is 100% the reason, but I know that you can't import birds like you used to back in the day because of the health laws or something of that sort. Someone on the forum said something about it. Everyone who had them back then I guess never bread them because they were everywhere then when they died out, and the new laws came in to affect no one has them anymore. Now they are like strawberries if you ever find a pair they will be outrageously priced. And most of the time you will not be informed if they are a true pair, or siblings, or anything like that.

believe it or not our Petco had a pair a few yrs ago...I went back a few days later to look and they were gone. My mother raised them also...If I find a pair next time I will definately add them to my gang!

There is a pet store close by that has a white headed nun that is beautiful. I am tempted to get it every time I pass by. They say they have a pair but the "other one" in the pair looks like an orange weaver to me. They are asking $40.

I thought that was the reason but wasn't sure. I thought maybe they just wouldn't breed in captivity. I'm learning through this forum that if I see certain birds in a pet store I should consider getting them because they are rare. But, there aren't many bird people up here so there is rarely any birds besides the usual ones. You never know though....
