Love them! They look just like the ones I have. The blue is a beautiful colour and that slash of red on the male's cheeks really makes them stand out. I love their little song. Wait til you see the male doing his grass dance - it is a hoot!

Does anyone know if they need a nest to sleep in at night?
All the pictures on the net show a round wicker basket for nesting.

They don't sleep in a nest at night, unless they are breeding. So if you don't want them to breed, you don't need to give them a nest. If you want them to breed, most of mine like the large hooded wicker nests, and then they use coco fiber to line the inside, and white feathers to make it nice and comfy. They will fill in the entrance so there is just a small entrance hole, the better to keep you from seeing what they are up to!

Mine only have a nest when they are breeding. They do like to hang out in foliage though, so I have woven some fake ivy plants in around the bars and they roost there. It provides them with a bit of cover. Mine also enjoy snacking on freeze dried bloodworms that you can buy for fish. They only toss the mealworms I give them around, so I don't bother with them anymore.
