My RCCB babies!

Post by L in Ontario » Mon Apr 18, 2011 6:17 pm

Three little RCCB eggs hatched one each day of April 15, 16 and 17. On April 17 and 18 two Society chicks also hatched. There is one more egg to go - most likely another Soc, judging from the size of it. =D>

I removed the RCCB eggs from the parents as I was tired of coming home to find tossed/dead chicks. The parents are still sitting on fake eggs at this time. 8)

Oh Liz, they are adorable little treasures! You must be so proud! I've been reading about how hard it is to get the natural parents to raise them. Sounds like you were right to put the eggs under the Society's. So happy for you, =D> and them! =D>

Liz, they look wonderful--congrats!! The Societies must be feeding, so that is great news, too. Once you get a set of Societies that will feed waxbills, they will feed just about anything!

Thank you. I've tried the natural way (via the real parents) for 2 clutches with LOTS of eggfood and mealies. They adored the food and scarfed everything down. I thought I had it made (thought they were feeding a bunch of little ones) until I found out nothing had even hatched. These parents toss as soon as the chicks start pipping. I've found several chicks (in two separate clutches) tossed still in 1/2 the shell but fully formed and quite ready to come out. Maybe the parents were too anxious to help them out. :?

Thanks Sally - yes they are feeding everyone here. This pair of Socs have already raised an RCCB (actually the father of these chicks), Stars, Zebras, Shaftails and Fire Finches - besides their own as well.

I also have a new young Soc in with them (it's a trio of Socs). The son of these Societies is in here, learning to be a foster-man as well. He hatched in December 1, 2010 and is doing a great job right along with his mom and dad in incubating, hatching and feeding these chicks.

That is just great, Liz! When I had Felix and Oscar, who would feed anything, I never looked beyond them to the future. Then, when I lost them one by one, suddenly I had nothing that would feed waxbills. So you are getting that young one trained right. That tells me I need to keep these 3 Society babies and do the same with them--maybe I can have a Felix and Oscar again.

Thank you Janine!

I'm sure you can and will Sally.

I also had a separate pair of Soc boys who were pretty good at fostering alien finches. So I split them up and gave them each a young Soc hen. One hen is about 7 months old and the other is about 3-1/2 months old. I named the hens Just Enough and Too Young. TY hasn't laid any eggs (obviously - that why I named her TY) and the other did lay 5 eggs - named Just Enough for her age). JE and her beau are sitting on 5 Parrot Finch eggs and 3 Soc eggs. TY is sitting on 6 Shaftail eggs that got buried (repeatedly) and 2 Soc eggs from JE. So we will see if these 2 pairs will be successful with their new young protegee in training as well.

Cute little punk rockers aren't they? I love their 'rad' hairdo's -- oh, I miss my bluebies! :(

Good job on those Soc's! I wish I had a dependable bunch that would raise waxbills! I'm still working on my two trio's and hoping I'll get some that will eventually raise waxbills....
