Painted Finch Compatibility

I wanted to get some feedback on compatibility of Painted finches with other Australian finches.. I just got several pairs & plan to cage breed most of them but can't resist setting up another Australian flight with these beautiful birds

.. I have never tried these and from what I have read they shouldn't be a problem with most of the other finches but I thought I better go to the experts

... Right now they are in a 4X12X8ft tall flight with one pair of Cherry finches & one pair of Blue Faced Parrott finches.. I would like to add a pair of Owls, a pair of Star's and maybe one pair of Gouldians.. Any thoughts, concerns, suggestions

Ohhh.... how I LOVE these birds. I have a pair along with an extra hen. They are VERY calm and sweet birds. In fact.... I can almost get right up to them in my aviary. They get along with everyone and I have never seen them be agressive.
I love to watch them shake their head from side to side when courting. Mine have built nest, but no eggs.
I don't think you will have any problems with them getting along with other birds.
Please post pictures!!!!!

I never had any aggression problems either with mine. They don't bully but they don't seem to let themselves be bullied either.
Who has young unrelated bloodlines for sale?
This is a rather rare species and pricey to boot. Donna needs a new male for her extra hen and would love to see her get one before they are too old to breed...

These are 2010 birds that came in from Europe.. I bought all that was available (4 pairs) and the price was,

well way to much.. I am going to sell one pair & the rest, I'm going to try and breed... You are right about how calm they are, specially in that big flight.. I will take some pictures in the morning and post them

Well I know what I paid for mine and that was close to $400 a pair!!!

So, I can't imagine what you paid for yours...
Good luck with them

Here in Adelaide Australia I have a pair in an outside aviary with a pair each of cubans, gouldians, firefinches, BFPF and orange breasted waxbills, and they have regularly produced clutches with no dramas from them or the other inhabitants. Just an all round laid back bird. Love their call, sounds like a broken spring!
I also have another aviary with a pair of these in with 2 pair of gouldians.
Also 4 single males in an all boy aviary with BFPF, young gouldians and a pair of quail, and again their easy going nature shines, no fighting amongst themselves or the others.

Love those Painted finches, Jan! Someday, if I get back into Australians. I think mickp had his in a community aviary, too, and he always had lots of babies of all species in his communities.

Oh my.... I am turning green.

Congrats on those beautiful painted finches. They are all beautiful and stunning, but those painted are breathtaking!! Let me know if you have babies! I wouldn't mind having some more. Gosh how I wish mine would breed!
They do say that they like to build their nest close to the ground.
Also to provide some small sticks and stones.....

Are you trying out flights with all specific species that would be from a certain country only? Or is it just the Australian one that you are doing?
They are gorgeous! I really love that OH star in the last picture - gorgeous color and conformation!

Misty.. That is exactly what I'm trying in this series of flights.. I have 2 African, 1 South/Central America, 1 European, & now 2 for the Australians.. I am giving everyone a chance to get along & so far I have only pulled out the Shaft Tails from the Australian, & the Wydah's from the African.. I have a pair of Diamond Sparrows that I would love to add to the Australian flight, but I am afraid to chance it even in a large flight

I do know I have never had the level of success with the African finches that I am seeing this year in these two flights.

Love your compatible species approach and keeping similar birds requirements together... not only a joy to watch but the work is a little less. Doesn't surprize me that you had to remove the shaftails..I have always found them dominant in the aviaries.
Your painted fires are truly awesome looking
Of course I think all of the birds are gorgeous.... but am partial to a couple
