Does anyone have/raise/breed these?
A supplier near me has 4 of them...beautiful
little birds!! I'm having a hard time finding any
info about them except you should buy a group
and let them pick their own mates. I guess they're very hard
to sex.
I think they are probably wild caught...he's asking
$125 a "pair" but can't really sex them.
I'm thinking about getting all of them(I know he
would cut me a "deal" if I did) and hoping there is
at least one pair there...just having difficulty
finding alot of info about them.
Anyone?

I know Floyd usually has them here in Atlanta Georgia - I too love them but have never actually owned any yet.

I had them years ago and raised a few clutches.. I think they are beutiful birds and one of the best community flight birds yo can have.. They got along with everyone.. In the past month I got a few more pair and once they pair off, I will be putting at least one pair in the African flight..

did you feed/have to feed live food or did they do it on soft/egg food?
Any other advice about nest type,nesting materials,etc?

The little info I've found does say they're great community/aviary birds...very friendly/non-aggressive....and it's best to let them pair up
on their own. Other than that, very little info available.
Any more tips/advice would be appreciated.

My experience with these birds is totally different from Jans. I have owned 4 pairs over the last 2 years. They have done well for a few months and then mysteriously die. The ones I kept in cages lived a little longer than the ones I put in the aviary.

I also love these birds, they are very beautiful, graceful birds and do get along with others. I may try again some day but I am not ready at this time. They are available now, most dealers have them. The average price is 140-150 per pair so the price you were quoted is a good price.


There is no visible distinction between male and female so it is best to buy in groups.

So I ended up getting these 4 pearl headed silverbills today.
I traded some of my recently colored up gouldians for them...
It was a great deal if you ask me.I ended up "paying" about
$180 for all 4...he was asking $125/pair for them.

Anyway,they are such handsome birds and very gentle/sweet.
They're now in quarantine with some black cheek zebras and a
few javas I got over the weekend.

I've been "watching" these guys at the supplier for several weeks
adn they barely made a sound while there.
Within seconds of putting them in tha quarantine flight, they were
calling and hopping around energetically.

Already I've heard 2 males sing...so far no singing from the
other 2(just calling)...1 that sings and 1 that hasn't have been hanging out together,preening each other. I know it's very early
but it looks hopeful that there may be at least 1 pair among them.

They have a cute little high pitched "peeping" call/song and are
very sleek,graceful,tight feathered finches.
I'll post some pics of all the new birds I've acquired recently as
soon as I can.

I don't remember giving them livefood, they do eat eggfood.. I have a few pairs i got about a month ago so I will be setting them up in the next week or two.. Like yours, they pair off quickly in a flight and I can see at least two pairs for sure.. They used cocofiber nesting material, can't remember which nest box but will let you know as soon as they pick one.

Got one definite pair and pretty sure the other 2 are a pair as well, but not "bonded" yet. They get along with everybody in the aviary
and are beautiful birds. I'll keep ya' posted...
