Orange Cheeks & Star finches

Hi

I'm new, and I've been reading here a lot the last several days. I've never kept finches but I have had a parakeet in the past. So, I'm not entirely new to birds but I am new to finches.

I'd like to start out with one species in a 30x18x18 cage, and later add another cage (using the panel remover and zip tie method I found on your very helpful forum!) and another species.

Should I start with the Orange Cheeks and later add the Stars? Vice versa? Or would it make any difference at all?

Also, I know teflon fumes are deadly. I'm also guessing that a vaporizer with Vicks would also be bad for them, correct?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum! :-)

I wouldn't use any spray or scended candle or air freshner or anything like that around birds. Anything that smells, basically, even if it smells good for us...

I started with Orange Cheeks and they have been great. Very hardy, active, and fun to watch. I did recently get Stars and have enjoyed them as well.

Both Stars and Orange Cheeks are great finches...I have both and love them....Just make sure with the Orange Cheeks you have a cage with no larger than 1/2 inch bar spacing....They are known to be escape artists!!...I have never had mine get out of my 1/2 inch cage though....It wouldn't make any difference which you get first, they will get along great!!...Can't wait to hear what you get!!...Keep us posted

Thank you all for your responses! I went to Petsmart to pick up a book on finches and saw some of the Orange Cheeks, and they are very cute. (I'll probably get all the birds at this store near me that says they breed them, though)

Good to know that it doesn't matter which ones I get first. I was afraid there might be a little bit of a territory dispute, and I want things as peaceful as they can be. :D

I'm taking it slow, just deciding what I wanted and what all they're going to need so that I can have everything in place.
I haven't even got the cage yet, but I'll be sure to let you know what I get first.

Thanks again!
