Do fingernails colour have something to do with the chick colour?
Some of my chicks have dark fingernails, some clear
Is it related to the head colour? body colour?
This one has dark ones;

and this one (OH) has clear ones:

Don't think so - both of those birds are genetically orange headed though, if it helps.

You're right. I have just taken a better look at the first one. So I guess the clear nails has something to do with being diluted. Normals and blues will probably have dark nails, and diluted, pastels, yellows etc will have clear ones.

All of my birds have clear nails and they are Normal, SFYellow, Blue, SFYellowBlue and YellowBlue. I went through my pictures on the computer of all the birds over 10 plus years and I've never had a bird with dark nails (at least in any of the pictures).
Interesting ...

I've had a few juvenile normals with dark nails, maybe a blue or two, but I don't really think there's any significance to it.. I would imagine genetic yellows would all have clear nails? (No melanin production).. but that's just a guess

WOW -- those chicks are just the cutest lil things, Tiffany! :mrgreen: You have no idea how much I'd love to be able to do that with our pair! Hmmm....I'm thinking a handfed chick may be in my future -- if and when that moment ever comes.

I lost my favorite baby from that clutch - in the second picture she's the one on the right begging.
She died suddenly out of nowhere.. one minute was fine, the next minute she was flailing on the ground and dead within seconds :(
I called her Porkchop because she was huge.. sad, she would have been gorgeous.

Drs. Brad and Deb Clark have her sister who is still tame..

Too bad about the one hen, Tiffany. Judging from how attached I've become to our pair, I'm realizing that these little things are real heart-breakers when they don't make it -- especially when it happens suddenly.

But no....I wasn't hinting that I wanted to adopt your hand-feds. :wink: Rather, I was just thinking I may want to try hand-feeding a chick produced by my pair -- IF the opportunity presents itself at some point. I'd love to raise a Gouldian to be tame enough to sit on my hand without fear. Most likely that is just wishful thinking though.

IMO there is nothing better than having a finch come to you for love :D :wink:

I didn't think you were hinting at adopting them :) Those babies were from 2009 - I don't have any of them anymore. The last one I had in my possession was the smallest, Tiny Tim, and he was one of the first pairs I sold when I sold off nearly all my birds. I do have three of his babies, though.
