Would the male be considered a double yellow or single?
I know the hen can only be a single yellow.

He is a DFY showing yellow. If he were SFY he would look like a pale green.

Thank's Liz!

Beautiful and wish you much success. I set up 8 pairs of first time parents that I raised last year. All pairs were raised in the same conditions here at my aviary. When paired they were all housed 1 pair to a breeding cage, all fed the same diet and given the same privacy of quarters. They have alll produced at least one clutch so far this spring. 2 pairs tossed and the other 6 did not.
This was an interesting experiment as I was watching for what factor may cause first time parents to toss.
Check list:
*pairs are the same age ... so it is not an age/maturity issue
*same diet... all had the exact same foods and quanity... so not that
* cage/nest type... all had identical set ups...so not that
* privacy... all had equal as they are all housed in the same room and close to the same height placement within this room.
* In sync breeding condition.... I paired according to their conditioning and feel that they were all pretty close to same hormonal conditions for breeding.
* Bonded pairs...... BINGO...this is where I noticed some problems. The 2 pairs that tossed bicker more than the other pairs. Never witnessed them both in the nest cuddling... the other 6 pair frequently both incubated together or at least spent some time together in the box. The 2 pair that tossed would both incubate individually but resisted spending mutual incubating or parenting time.
The eggs seemed to hatch while the hen was on incubating duty and when the male went into the nest seemed to mistake the chick for an intruder and tossed. The other pairs seemed to both be on alert with the hatching of the egg and recognized it as that and not an intruder of the nest.
After the next clutch was tossed by the pair I set the hen up with a different male and they are at this moment raising a small clutch of 2 with no problems. They also seem to be a much tighter bonded pair that she was with her previous mate...... The other pair that tossed are left together to see if they will toss the second clutch...so far they have not even shown any interest in going back to nest. Though they are not fighting and the cock is courting, I think she refuses to bond with him. They are both red heads (sometinmes this does make a difference). Overall I was glad to have these results... the majority of pairs did not toss. My experiment is still ongoing.
