Gouldian flight feather loss

Post by honeymooners » Mon May 23, 2011 8:13 pm

My 4 Gouldians went through a very successful molt last month. Now they seem to be losing feathers again, and one female, Trixie, is flightless  due to flight feather loss. I've read on different posts that this is NOT normal. I am following proper diet and lighting. Will being flightless for a period of time affect her health? And if so what can I do to help the poor girl?

They are doing a hard moult again? Can I ask what kind of supplements you are using with them? I ask because some will cause the birds to moult and moult as if they never have before...

I also seem to recall a certain illness that will allow this happen but need to research this to be certain. I found the article I was thinking about - this mentions possible problems from missing flight feathers.

Thanks for the reply! I feed them 'stress & molting' seed, protein egg food, 'Avitron' liquid vitamin supplement daily in their water. Dried herbs, millet, cuttle bone, and dried fruit mix available daily as well. There hasn't been any temperature changes or anything in the house...nothing else that I can think of has happened that might cause such a drastic change in her. They are kept indoors in a cage, directly in front of a window (no drafts) with full spectrum lighting placed up top. Other than being bound to the bottom of the cage, she does not appear stressed at all..no puffing out her chest or anything else that might implicate sickness. I've placed some perches down there for her to hop up on. I can't figure out what the missing puzzle piece is.
