What Are These?

I answered an online ad for "two finches". The girl said one is a zebra, and didn't know what the other was.
She sent me this photo, taken by her cell phone.
Aren't these society finches? I'm pretty sure the lighter-colored one is, but I've never seen a solid dark brown (or black?) society before. Very pretty, whatever it is.
We're supposed to go look at them in the morning.

The light one is definitely a Society, but the darker one is not clear enough to guess....You can have Chocolate Self Societies that are dark brown

The first one is a pied fawn and the other could well be a chocolate self Society. Hard to tell without seeing its stomach.
Have fun looking at them tomorrow!

Looks like it's a spice finch. We went ahead and got them. The cage alone is worth the $30 they were asking for everything.
Not a very good pic, but you can see its belly better. VERY pretty bird. It looks like shiny dark chocolate with white sprinkles. LOL! And somebody needs a toenail trimming.
I'm not sure yet if they're males or females, or one of each. The girl didn't know.

Well, one's definitely a male because he just bursted out into song!

I'm not sure which one it was, though, because as soon as I turned my head to look, he immediately stopped.

The society is the male. Still not sure on the spice.
The poor society's toenails were in worse shape than the other's. They were so long that they were making his toes lay over sideways where he couldn't straighten them out right.

I trimmed both their nails as much as I dared, and will trim them again in a week or so. The spice finch had one toenail that had broken off. Probably got caught on something.
The society's beak also has an overgrowth on one side. I've never trimmed a beak. How would I go about doing that? I put a beak block in the cage, but it's probably not going to be enough. The overgrowth doesn't seem to be affecting his ability to eat, thank goodness.

You can trim the beak the same way as the nails, using a nail clipper. I have done this twice before. The best way to keep their beak in order however, is to place a pediperch next to their waterer. That way they will wipe off their beak on that.
