So I bought a lonely little gouldian over the weekend. The girl at the pet shop told me it was a female. Any way to know for sure????

Thanks!

Hmmm...I'm not the best judge of that, being relatively new to Gouldians. But I do know that you've got a really beautiful bird! =D> Even though its head and breast coloration is actually very, very similar to my purple-breasted hen's, I'm thinking based on the beak and tail that it may be a lilac-breasted male instead. But please don't take my word for it -- far more experienced Gouldian keepers than me could better answer that! Either way, welcome to the wonderful, colorful world of Gouldians!

I agree, It does look like a hen but it's beak is red which would suggest male, although it is hard to tell from the photo. Have you noticed it singing? Only the males sing

You have a beautiful RH-PB-GB (NB) [Red Head - Purple Breast - Green Back (Normal Back)] female. If it were male, the head color would be almost completely red (barely any black) and if it were a lilac breasted male, the head would be a unblemished red (clean mask). When your female is in breeding condition (if you have plans to breed her), her beak will turn black. Good luck and congratulations on such a beautiful new bird.
