Red-throat & Seagreen Parrot Finches

Post by L in Ontario » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:13 pm

I have the pair of these birds where the RT male is pied. Their first clutch yielded 1 chick that is a pied RT (gender unknown as yet). Their second clutch yielded 2 seagreen chicks. I don't know if they are pied as yet nor their gender.

Does this mean the father MUST be split to Seagreen?

They are sitting on their final clutch and as of a few days ago, they had 5 fertile eggs. [-o<

If I understand you correctly your male is RTPF and the hen SGPF?

They young seagreens should be hens, normals males. It's a sex linked gene. The male need not be split to seagreen to produce sg young.

If you get male seagreens from this pairing then yes he would have to be split for Seagreen. Not really sure how the split gene works in Parrot finches. Splits complicate things.

I would assume all will be pied or lightly pied eventually. I've yet to find a pied gene that does not manifest itself somewhere down the line.

If the male is RT and the hen is SG, then female chicks will be RT and male chicks will be split/SG.

If the male is RT split/SG and the hen is SG, then female chicks will be RT or SG and male chicks will be SG or RT split/SG.

Since you have SG chicks, your male must be split/SG. And your SG chicks can be male or female.

On your first clutch, with one chick, that chick will be either a normal female or a split male.

Don't know how the pied genes work, just the mutation genes.

#-o got it wrong again! LOL the parrot finches genetics get complicated.
I found it easier to understand the Gouldians genetics... I've now saved the site Ikom made for the forecaster as the gouldian ones helped me so much in learning the combinations.

I think the seagreens should be hens.

SG cock x Normal Hen = 50% SG hens : 50% Split cocks
SG cock x SG Hen = 50% SG cocks : 50% SG hens
Normal cock x SG hen = 50%Normal hens : 50% split cocks
Split cock x SG hen = 25% SG cocks : 25% split cocks : 25% SG hens : 25% Normal Hens
Split cock x Normal hen= 25% normal cocks : 25% split cocks : 25% normal hens : 25% SG hens

Thanks everyone for the input! Of course I'm about as confused as in the beginning. I did use Igor's breeding chart.

I do not know if the pied RT male is split or not. :|

I posted that thread in Genetics about sex-linked genetics. There it will show you what you should have. I got this information from rayray with regard to the fawn Owls, but all the same information should apply.

Your RT male must be split--otherwise, you would not have any SG chicks, only split males and normal females. And according to the chart, any SG chicks from pairing split male to SG female will produce both male and female SG chicks. So now you don't get any help from the color for sexing the babies.

I love the pairing of a mutation male to a normal hen, as then all mutation chicks are female, all normal-looking chicks are split males--makes it sooo easy, got your color and sex all figured out right off the bat.

Thanks Sally for clearing that up. This is the way I've got my pairs to keep my sanity. Now off to brush up on my sex-linked genetics...
