OC Waxbill song for Liz and everybody else

I managed to record a song of my juvenile Orange Cheeked Waxbill (Estrilda melpoda). The other adult males sound the same.

I played it 3 times for my OC and I "think" it is a girl. The recording sort of sounds like continuous waves to me. My OC replied the first time in single waves with a break in between - unlike the recording which goes on and on and on (beautifully).

The second and third time (about 10 minutes apart) my OC listened attentively did not reply at all.

Jacqui - do you recall if that is the finch song we heard on the way home back on May 22nd?

Liz, I just don't know. One of my OC males had never sang until he wanted to mate with a Goldbreasted male. I've never heard my OC female making any sounds, but she has a male that sings to her from time to time.

Sounds like it could be a male then, if you've never heard your OC hens sing.

After checking out the internet and Youtube - it would seem like I have a male also. Females purportedly do not sing (or sing very disjointed and weakly). My little guy's sounds were not weak nor disjointed rather they were short and rhythmic but not one long song like your recording. I vote MALE for mine too. I'll try to find a hen for him and if he turns out to be a she - it will only be an excuse to get yet another!

I think that means that my 3 are all females... Listening to the ikhom's soundclip I didn't recognize that as anything that I've ever heard in my aviary. I'll play that to mine this weekend and see if I can get some reaction.

I just tried it... The only real curious birds were the gouldians. As always! They are the nosiest birds ever. Whenever something happens, they are the first to check it out.
My orange cheeks were sitting close to the aviary door huddled under some ivy for a lunch nap. They may have looked in my direction where I was standing with the laptop, but they didn't react in any way more curious than all other birds, and didn't bother interrupting their cosy nap. Maybe they are too old by now to care about males anymore, because it's too long ago that they ever heard some?
