Spice Question

Does anyone have any idea of a way to decide if a Spice finch is female? I want to get another hen as I have two males and one hen. The one male is always left alone and I think he could use a friend. These Spice finches did not sing for about one year and now the hen laid one egg, infertile though. Any thoughts on accurately picking another hen???

Sexes are alike. Males will sing. Only accurate way of sexing.

The saying is if you buy five or six you could get lucky and get two pairs. When I had spice finches they did great in a colony. The more the better. I color banded them and waited to hear them sing. The ones that the singers all chased and sang to were hens.

I know. I did that and originally bought five. I now only have three, as two died of unknown causes, although, we think one might have been a hen that was eggbound. We had just started finches then and were not as knowledgeable as now. That said, I am left with two cocks and one hen. The lone cock, without a mate, looks so sad and is always by himself. I want to get his a mate. Any other thought without buying a bunch more?

Advertise "looking for spice finch hen" on Ebay, Hoobly and craigslist?

That would be my advise, try to buy from someone that has already confirmed the sex of their birds.
