Mixed Flight - Which Species?

Post by flrancho » Sat Jul 30, 2011 11:22 am

I have a mixed flight and have always just bought whatever bird has appealed to me at the time, which has had its downs, like when I bought my pin-tailed Whydah pair without knowing how aggressive the Whydahs can be. Anyway, I know more about finches now. :) In the future though, I'd like to just focus on perhaps 4 different species (1 pair of each), but I'm not sure which one's I'd like. There's two I'm considering, but I'm not quite sure which would be best, and I'd like some opinions on my possible choices. I'm also thinking that I'd like to try breeding.

Option #1:
Lady Gouldian
Blue Cap Cordon or Green Singer (depending on how aggressive)
Shaft-Tail
Java Rice

Option #2:
Society
Spice
Black-Headed Nun or other Nun variety
Java Rice

I came up with "option 1" mainly because those are the bigger finches and since I already have a Java, was considering bigger birds that wouldn't be so intimidated of them. However, the birds in that option are generally more expensive and harder to take care of (and I didn't had good luck with the one Gouldian I had). However, they're some real pretty birds, but I'm not sure they're personalities would work out. With "option 2", a lot of those birds are easy to care for, but they're not quite as pretty color-wise, they're harder to sex and quite a bit smaller than the Java Rice. Which option do you like better?

If you don't like either, the only definite that I'd "have to keep" is the Java Rice (I've become quite attatched to the them); what other species would you recommend to keep with them?
